    View attachment WD-Dieppe-1.doc Hi all,

Here is the first of the two Dieppe Raid items.

Please note the suffix '1' which denotes it is the first in the cronological order.

    Cheers Gerry

PS Of interest is that Queen Emma was the one that transported the major part of NIH personnel eastwards from Algiers.

    Hi Ron,

Re the Jewish Brigade happy to oblige. Will do so immediately following completion of Dieppe Raid part 2 - the Calgary Regiment material presently under way.

    Cheers, Gerry

    Hi Gerry,

Daimler Scout Cars HECTOR and HOUND have the same census number F64306? Not sure if this is a typo or not.

    cheers

Ron's posting - way back of the visit of Brig Dawney 26th AB and Major Bullivant of 16/5th Lancers of 6th AD brought back good memories as Major Bullivant was our guiding light at the Vienna Tattoo in 1946 as he had some

experience of the pre-war Tattoo's in London - he with Capt. Peter Bull and Capt - The Lord Carmichael put us through our paces with much hilarity as we played the role of Robin Hood and his merry men holding up the stagecoach and

demanding " Money or your Life " with the 16/5th Lancers coming to the rescue with their outstretched clothes pole Lances - the reason for the clothes poles was the fact that the 2nd Gloucester Hussars - doing a musical ride didn't have

Lances and so borrowed the 16/5th Lances - and we were stuck with sharpened clothes poles with a little pennant - the whole Tattoo was a hoot - BUT we raised more than 10,000 GBP's enough to send 2400 Viennese schoolchildren into the

countryside for good food and fresh air

See my article on the BBC war series below

    Cheers

    Hi Kevin,

My source specifically quotes both having the same number. Anyway, having accessed Gooogle, in quotes "hector scout car" and "hound scout car " about ten results came up for each - the same number for both from several different sources.

Conclusion: Either Calgary Regiment or the makers goofed.

    Cheers as always,

    Gerry

    Hi Matt,

If war diaries have been typed transcribing is not too difficult.

When I first starting photographing them at the National Archives, my good friends the Vaugh brothers advised me to use the pay service to copy them - a good way but rather expensive.

What I do now is in two steps:

Scan a photo using Microsoft Office Picture Manager to improve it as best can be done. Re-scan to ascertain the best dpi resolution checking on Microsoft Word. Should a few or many words appear in bold or unwanted itallics they can be removed en masse.

Practice speeds up the process. I use an Epson scanner GT-1500.

    Cheers, Gerry,

Superb documents posted on this thread - most helpful for my reading on Tunisia
(surreptitious bump for others who haven't seen them).

Very belated comment, but I thoroughly enjoyed Gerry's document about the Kingforce tanks.

I'm prepping to go to the Canadian archives next week and one of the things I could request is a file containing a German report on captured Churchills and a report on the Kingforce Churchills' performance. I guess I'm going to request and photograph them unless someone on the site has already done so.
