"The MASSACRE of ABDACOM: The Destruction of the United States, British, Dutch and Australian Forces by the Japanese In World War II", by J. Lee Ready.

Nice piece which provides a timeline of events all over ABDACOM. Kind of puts together everything that happened from the Philippines to Burma in an orderly date-based fashion, while providing some light (scant, but some, nevertheless) on some actions which got overshadowed by more important ones which happened at the same time.

    Hi sol,

I agree with you about Wild Green Earth, everything seems to have to be changed in some way these days. Thanks for all the recent reviews.

Another one, this the one am about to get :

"Burma '44: The Battle That Turned Britain's War In The East", by James Holland.

It is supposed to be THE book about the Admin Box affair (at least, up until now). In fact, its first market name was "Like Cornered Tigers", and IMHO, it was more fitting.

"Sink the Haguro!" by John Winton

Very detailed and well written account about last destroyer action by the RN of the War. It also give a brief introduction to the RN operations in the Indian Ocean and Andaman Sea. Definitely recommended reading.

And I finally obtained a copy of "Jungle Fighter" by John Hedley. I was looking for (affordable version of) this book for a long time.

I am due a re-read of Hedley's book. I also waited what seemed like an eternity for a sensibly priced copy to become available. £30+ for a book of 150 pages was always a bit steep. I know that you also suffer from ridiculous p+p, which adds to the potential pain.

Hedley was one of few people who were at Sittang in 1942 and later wrote about it. So it was quite on the top of my list of the most wanted books. Somehow there were always one or two copies available on the net but they were usually a little too expensive for me.

I'm sorry but I have to disappoint you. Hedley book is about his war time in Burma and Siam. He served in the Burma Rifles, the Chindits (the Second Expedition) and SOE. There is only one short chapter about Sittang. But, as you probably know, even that is one chapter more than books about that part of the war usually have, I mean on biographies, of course.

    Should pay is rather subjective.

I've been looking for a decent copy in a jacket for a couple of years now, but nothing has come up except in sub-standard condition for ambitious prices.

I found a decent ex-library copy about six months back. I was keen to get it, as I knew it contained some excellent photographs of the men involved.

I was interested in the content after reading an interesting site by a descendants of one of the men involved:

I also collect books by WW2 British Generals and already have three titles by (Lieut. Gen) Geoffrey Evans:

    - Slim as Military Commander
    - Imphal: A Flower on Lofty Heights
    - The Desert & The Jungle

Well, at least Siam and SOE sound interesting enough...

I too am looking for From Pyramid to Pagoda but not at the price I have see on the Internet!
I have recently put in a request to the Yorkshire regimental museum for photocopies of a few pages that I'm interested in. They were able to help out years ago with a similar request so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
If the rest of the book is as informative as the few pages I have then it will be a real prize on the bookshelf.

Lionboxer, my interest was peaked as the West Yorks are mentioned in the book I'm currently reading and their role in the battle for Meiktila, as for price on the book seen it without Dustcover for £65 at its cheapest and £200 plus at its worse, and one if those at £206 is not far from me but its way overpriced.

I know it is not a book but a movie "Kato hayabusa sento-tai" just happened to jump into it on youtube all by mistake.

A Japanese warmovie about one of their Aces and his elite fighter squadron. Being wartime the Allied are a bit clumsy of course but it do bring Japanese planes into life.

Good to see you again Jason. "From Pyramid to Pagoda" is also quite high on my wish list. 1st West Yorks was the first British battalion that reached Burma during 1942 as part of reinforcements. Couple of copies available online are too expensive. But I live in a hope that sometime somebody will be republish this and all other regimental histories. Couple of them are already available but sadly none of the regiments I'm interested in.
