Trawler ID DUNKIRK 1940

Discussion in 'The War at Sea' started by Roger Griffiths, Aug 24, 2016.

  1. Could anyone identify the Trawler in the attached photograph.
possibilities PAXTON (LT1114), BOY ROY (LT1167), GIRL PAMELA (LT52) and LORD CAVAN (LT680).

    Thanks

Roy Martin may be able to help. I can probably tell you what happened to all of them from my books but unlikely to identify this one so not sure if that would help? I'm assuming all the ships you've mentioned were lost during Dynamo?

  3. Thanks for the reply, yes all the vessels mentioned were lost at Dunkirk.

Boy Roy and Paxton were beached off Dunkirk after being damaged in an air raid on the 28th May 1940 so I suspect it won't be those two.

The Drifter Girl Pamela was sunk off Dunkirk Harbour after a collision with Lydd on the night 28th/29th May 1940 so I'd say she's a possibility.

Lord Cavan was sunk by shell fire as she quitted the pier at Dunkirk on the 1st June so she looks the most likely candidate. Interestingly she was the depot ship on SNO Dunkirk which was the then Captain Tennant RN.

  5. Thanks Drew 5233,
The general consensus puts BOY ROY and PAXTON in the frame as favourites but your contribution certainly throws new evidence into the mix.

    regards
