Hello, Was there a general model for digging the trenches of the Gort line? Or was there a difference in trench construction in different Battalion, Regiment or Coprs sectors? Regards Koen
There's some sketch plans amongst the appendices within some of the 1940 Infantry war diaries. It will be a while before I can check though. Diane may have some examples in one of the Guards war diaries I sent her. If you search the 1940 section I may have even posted the pages on here.
Not exactly what you want but just stumbled on this and thought it may be of use? It's from the 1st Division's General Staff 1940 war diary.
Also just found this: IWM Image O 223 Men of 1st Battalion Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders constructing trenches at Aix, 12 November 1939.
Hello Drew, Thanks it a push in the right direction. Diagram A shows how intricate the building of trenches was. It's not just a ditch in the ground. The trench in the picture below looks a lot different then on the photograph of the QOCH. The one below looks more like the trenches the British used in the later parts of the Great War. IWM: F 2212
Came across this photograph of troops from the Royal Berkshire Regiment manning trenches near Mouchin. Here you can clearly see the layout of the trench. IWM: O 415
Very WW1. That said, its worth pointing out these are clearly prepared positions. The defensive positions I discovered near Aumalelast year are just shell scraps at best.
