I'm trying to help someone make head or tail of their uncle's service record and I am stuck with the following abbreviation. It is written in two places on the service record, both of which coincide with a posting. The first is to North Africa, the second is the return from India to the UK.

What I am looking to try and understand in full is L.D. Ass. Centre. I'm guessing that it is an assembly point for the various units prior to embarkation, but I cannot for the life of me find out what the "L.D. Ass." stands for. I would be very grateful for any help given, as this is pretty much the last piece of the jigsaw and I just can't find it anywhere!

    Guessing, Loading Draft Assembly.

That's super, thank you RCG. It's been the "L" bit in particular that was frustrating me, although the "D" was annoying me too. I think your guess is most likely to be spot on.

    Thank you again,

EDIT: A lightbulb just went off in my head! My father was also shipped out to India in 1944 from Liverpool. Could the "L" of L.D. Ass. Centre be 'Liverpool'?

RRTB. Had another look and am thinking we both might need to change light bulbs.
Loading Draft Assembly Centre, just don't look right.
Why is it not written down as LDAC?
Why would it not be Loading Draft Assembly Area?
So must be something pacific, to use the word Centre.
Another thought. Loading Document assistance centre.
Liverpool? Don't think the army would name an area where troops are massed by the place that it actually is.

Another thought. Landing/departure assistance centre. Where troops reported to if unsure of the ship they were suppose to get on or where they were supposed to go when they got off. Rail tickets/passes were collected from?

I suspect that "Ass" may well be "Assessment", which would fit with "Centre".

The Assessment Centre element might also fit with this chap's background medical issues. He was twice on the "Y" List, the first coming not long before the first mention of L.D.Ass.Centre on the war service record. He was about to be shipped out to North Africa with the 3rd battalion Welsh Guards so I just wonder if indeed this was a 'final medical check' to verify that he was ok medically to be sent.

He was sent to North Africa for just short of 300 days, then shipped back home. We again see this L.D. Ass.Centre mentioned when he is sent to India in 1945. The service record is not to hand, but I think I am remembering correctly to say that he was not on the Y list for the second time until he returned to the UK.

    Yes would agree with that.
Looking back at the history of assessment centres – they originated in a military context by the German intelligence and were refined by the British and the Americans in WWII, moving into commercial use in the 1950’s by AT&T and other large organisations such as IBM, Sears, General Electric etc. The expansion of usage came mainly in the seventies where they also began being used for development purposes. Today, they are fairly commonly used in all sizes of organisations.

    Local Defence?

Currentspeak, it's a dead cert to be Learning Difficulties Assessment Centre or Landrover Discovery Assessment Centre. :banghead:

Further to my last, Loading Dock..., Landing Dock..., and crabspeak Landing Distance.

And every squaddies favourites: Long Drop and Light Duties.

And finally, since they've travelled so far, how about Long Distance.

That suggestion about Light Duties is an interesting one. The chap whose records I'm trying to help with suffered badly with varicose veins and we do have the AF B179 which shows the treatment, the recommendation to be recategorised from A1 to Section B2 and the length of time for that which was 3 months in his case. We also know he was a batman for the Lt Col, so Light Duties might indeed be a contender for the answer I'm searching for.

    Thanks everyone for joining in.
