Hi, In researching the late racing driver Ken Miles i have discovered whilst in the RA Territorial Army he was posted to a Coastal Defence Anti Aircraft unit located in a chief armament producing area of England? Hope to find out where soon. After that Miles was posted to a Driver Training Regiment in Blackpool (1941) where he taught new soldiers how to drive army vehicles. I would like to know a bit more about the Driver Training Regiment please. Some questions, where exactly was the base, i read on the internet the headquarters was at Cleverley, is that true. Was the vehicles stored there too. Did they teach soldiers from all over the country to drive the vehicles or just the local area? Is the Training base still there or disbanded after the war? Anything else of interest regarding the subject please. Thanks, Paul
Paul good luck with your search. I believe driver training centers were located around the UK. My Dad attended 10 DTC based in Cromer from enlisting to postingto his first Company. 12 DTC was based in Eklington. The best feeling I can get at the moment is that these were a type of outpost training center of the main training center based in Aldershot. Others will be along who know far more. I have been unable to find 10 DTC location in Cromer or much of what went on. Brian
And, of course, there were many training centres scattered all over England that taught driving in addition to another skill such as the centre in Whitby that turned out Driver/Operators who were later employed in both the RA and the RAC. And I should know because I trained in both of thse services Ron
Aha, so Blackpool one of many Driver Training Regiment units. Any more details on the Cleverly headquarters at Blackpool?
Bit of a late update, i have recently found out the person i am researching was in the 227th A.A. DVR Training Regt R.A. for a period in 1940/42 and was stationed in Blackpool. Would like to confirm where exactly the training was held?
