    Simon,

The first thing I did when researching my grandfather, was to send off for his Army service records. These will help show you where Edwin served in WW2 and save any wild goose chases.

Here is a link to the MOD website for how to process this:

    Good luck going forward.

There were two born in 1909, one in Pontypool and one in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire.

One passed away in 1965 East Glamorgan, Glamorganshire and one in 1990 in Pontypool.

South Wales Borderers and Monmouthshire Regiment didn't go to France in 1940.

The 1st battalion Monmouthshire Regiment converted to a Searchlight Regiment around 1939/1940 and from 1940 they ceased to be part of the Monmouthshire regiment and were part of the royal artillery.

My Grandfather was first in the South Wales borders 1st mons battalion (service number 4078433) and then part of the 68th searchlight regiment. He was in the 1st searchlight unit in France in May 1940. He was captured by the German army in Calais. I know there were many battalions that converted into anti-aircraft roles at the beginning of the war.

    hope this may help.

    Hi Simon,
Some very close ifo. here. My dad's number was 4074452 so also a Territorial and then regular. He was recalled early in September and sent to France. Everything they had 50 men off they went. Also born in 1909 in Crumlin! Captured on Somme spent 5 years as PoW,
    Dave
