I must admit I'm being lazy by not looking but is anyone out there buying lots of books on the 2003 Iraq war?

I suspect now that after the passage of time that there may be a good 'reference' book or two out there on the war. Containing Pictures, Maps etc etc especially on the 1 Division and or 7 Armoured Brigade side of things.

My reasoning for asking is that it struck me today that I still do not know to this day what actually happened in any detail (apart from we won).

A bit strange you may think but growing up on media wars and conflicts watching the battles in the Falklands, Gulf 1, Bosnia, Seirra Leone and the like in my front room I always felt I had a fairly good understanding of what was going on. In Iraq I rarely knew what was going on outside of my Troops AOR not having any access to reliable media etc.

    Cheers

    I have a few, including a US official/semi-official history.

I've also met the guy compiling the British OH but it is far from complete.

I can post details of the US books if of interest?

Cheers Paul...My interest is only of my Brigade/Div and what the Battlegroups were doing.

Feel free to pass on any of the pictures I have to him and I have a full set of maps from the British AOR and detailed two detailed maps of Basrah (Governement buildings marked in red) if he wishes to see them. The AOR maps mark Charlie Troops, 207 Sig Sqn route around Southern Iraq and locations of my Re-broadcasting Detachments with dates if memory serves me well (I've not looked at them since 2003).

Have you seen the book by Tim Ripley: Operation TELIC: The British Campaign in Iraq 2003-2009
I've not seen anything like the HMSO titles published on GW1.

I can recommend to start with "Enemy on the Euphrates" by Ian Rudledge about the period 1914-1921. Especially the afterword made me think again about what is going on today. Part of it change the year and you will think it happend 10 years ago.

My husband has a book called The Corps of Royal Engineers, Operation Telic October 2002-July 2003.

Everyone in his Regt (and presumably the Corps) who was out there at that time was given a copy.

It has a large fold out map (possibly two) with it, as well as a very detailed timeline of events, lots of photos and details of what every squadron and Regiment got up to out there.

It's well worth a look, very interesting and a great deal of information. It's Restricted but no doubt there are some knocking around somewhere.

Possibly not exactly what you were looking for, but I thought I'd mention it nonetheless.

    Well TijgerB,

On you're recommendation I am just starting to read Enemy on the Euphrates. I will get back to you when I have finished the book. Looks good already.

    Best wishes

TijgerB, really enjoyed the book. It is a very valauble insight into the modern history of the region and how very little has changed in terms of motive for being invovled in Iraq over the last 80 years or so. I struggled at first remembering all the Arabic names of the local chieftans, but I'm used to this type of problem from encountering names of Burmese villages and towns in my usual reading material.

    Cheers
