Michael, Frank Carruthers went on to become editor of the weekly 'West Cumberland Times' until it became the 'Times and Star'. He used to write a weekly feature on various matters (local history, etc) for many years afterwards in the 'Times and Star' and 'News and Star'. I assume you would remember him?

I think many of his notebooks, photographs, cuttings of articles he wrote over the years were deposited in the County Archives, including some about the war. I believe he was originally from the Shap area but was better known in West Cumbria.
