A lump of concrete stuck on the side of a lake, near an island.

Could have been a ROC post or part of the Western Command Stop Line No 18.
    What is the exact position?

How do we know it was built as a defensive structure, Jeff?

Could it be a cover for a pumping station? It looks as if it's at the head of the lake.

It says a gun emplacement. But why?
We've walked around there a few times, and on the opposite side of the lake. Got the boat from Patterdale once.

Don't think anyone can say what it is for certain, on the scant evidence given.
Ullswater Hotel was an army gas training camp, mini subs were trialled at the lake and flying boats were used there. Pic of the front might have helped.

Have you tried the Pillbox Study Group site to ask this question and the Extended DOB database on Google earth?

RGG, I have researched the lake and could find no evidence of Mini Subs, Other than the Propaganda put out by the Steamer Company. Where did you get the info? Jeff

Jeff. You are the one who wants to get this concrete structure identified.

Your first post. What is it Please?

And a picture of the structure. It was only from the title that we know it is situated on the bank of Ullswater.

Now as I have not seen a structure such as that, I was interested it what it was/is.

I replied with tongue in cheek.

<A lump of concrete stuck on the side of a lake, near an island.

Could have been a ROC post or part of the Western Command Stop Line No 18.
    What is the exact position?>

As the Western Command Stop Line No 18. Runs from Penrith southwards to the east of Ullswater, I can now rule out that it was not part of that.

Other posters have asked questions, which you have not replied to.

We then get a map showing the position of the structure, and it being a gun emplacement.

TricaF replies with, <It says a gun emplacement. But why?
We've walked around there a few times, and on the opposite side of the lake. Got the boat from Patterdale once.>

Now on the picture of the structure, there are no visible signs of any anchorage points to fix anything upon this structure.

The plinth on top the structure must have a purpose, but as it is oblong this could rule it out as mounting for a gun.

    I then posted.

<Don't think anyone can say what it is for certain, on the scant evidence given.
Ullswater Hotel was an army gas training camp, mini subs were trialled at the lake and flying boats were used there. Pic of the front might have helped.>

Simply because you seem to be reluctant to supply more details.

And I had found that Ullswater Hotel was an army gas training camp, mini subs were trialled at the lake and flying boats were used there on various websites that I quoted.

Now this opens the question of who used this site Army, Navy, Airforce, ROC or ship builders.

Pic of the front might have helped.

It could show whether, the structure is solid or not.

    Your replies.

<RGG, I have researched the lake and could find no evidence of Mini Subs, Other than the Propaganda put out by the Steamer Company. Where did you get the info? Jeff

So you have disregarded that line of research why?

There is no evidence that I have robbed a bank.

There is no evidence that I haven’t.

Is it possible I have? The only answer is yes it is possible.

So the same must apply to mini subs being used at Ullswater, In fact more so, as midget submarines or X craft, were manufactured by Vickers at Barrow in Furness.

Windermere would be too open to the public to hold trials there, but the back end of Ullswater, with an Army camp already there as security. It is a possibility it could have happened.

I will now patiently wait to see if this structure is ever positively identified.

If you really want to know, ask one of the oldies in the area - I see you live in Cumbria.

I took part as a Recorder for the Defence of Britain Project and logged about 350 Sites in West Cumbria, but never came over anything like this. As it is Halfway down the Lake and has a Good View. I thought it may be a Searchlight platform or a Light AA Gun Mounting.
