    Hello,

I hope someone can help me with finding a British soldier. When the war was over in Holland, my grandads father received a coat and a 1 gulden paper from this soldier with his name and numbers. Many years later my grandad would like to give the coat and '1 gulden' back to him or his family.

On regular sites i can't find nothing with his name or number so i hope someone here can help us a little bit further. Excuses for the bad English.

    Name soldier : Lomas

    Number : 7879696

    5in R.I.D.G B.L.A

    March 1945

There are 2 other names on it but its difficult to read after all those years.

    Hi Kelsey
    Welcome

From the note the main man I think I can make out is:
    7879696
    Cpl C ? Lomas
    5in R.I.D.Gos
    B.L.A (British Liberation Army)
    March 1945

The other on the top right hand side I think says:
    7920310
    ? ? Rose

Maybe others will have different ideas

What a relief that we all gave the same answer !

My father was in Eindhoven during the winter of 1944/45 and 'donated' an army blanket to the family that he was billeted with. Mevrouw Matheussen made a coat for Truusje who must have been 8 or 9 at the time. He corresponded with the family into the 1950s.

Cyril Frederick Lomas Born : 1/9/1911 Mardy Glamorgan
    Died : 1Q 1990 North Dorset
His attestation states that he was born in 1910, Mardy Glamorgan. His given age is 18 years 163 days on enlistment into the Royal Tank Regiment on the 11th February 1928.
The only Cyril Lomas birth registered registered in Glamorgan was in 3Q 1911 Pontypridd, Glamorganshire. It looks like he has added a year to his actual age to enlist?

    Kelsey,
A copy of Cyril's death certificate may be helpful in tracing any close relatives?

There are also 2 family trees on Ancestry that have his name and details - I will send each of them a message with a link to this thread and see what happens

Hello what a lovely story you've contacted me via ancestry - my grandmother was Cyril's cousin, her mother was a Lomas and she also grew up in Glamorgan.
I'm afraid I don't know if he had any direct descendants or closer relatives than me as I haven't researched everyone down from my great grandmother's many brothers and sisters. So nice to see his writing too!

If you can obtain a copy of Cyril's Death Certificate, this might give details of a relative such as a wife or other person who may have registered the death. If this draws a blank, there is a local paper The Dorset Echo. They like stories such as this. You can contact them via their website www.dorsetecho.co.uk. Good luck with the hunt.

I've now heard from Anna the other person on ancestry asking me if I can help so assuming she doesn't know any information.

    Hello all.

We found Cyril's son, he is living in Gillingham, Dorset. Cyril had also two daughters.
The vest and gulden arrived safely last week. They were very excited and didn't know Cyril had been in Holland.
I want to thank you all, for the work, time, and effort, we couldn’t have done it without you
For those who are interested, the Blackmore Vale is going to do a follow up. I will let you know.

    Best wishes,

    Kelsey
