What the Germans could see of the Dover Area from France ?

    I remember seeing a memorial on the Dover sea front recording it as a frequent target for cross Channel guns...no doubt it was random with little if any early warning.

    I think the only reason that there was not more was the cost of shelling in terms of the gun barrel wear and tear

    Perhaps these photos were for recognition purposes for the proposed Operation Sealion.

    Probably way off but just thinking outloud.

    Schloß Dover is as said Dover Castle and Säule is as stated, Pillar, Column, tower etc.

    A nice nostalgic set of photographs non the less.

    Probably seen through a pair of "rabbit ear" binoculars which were usually about 8x magnification and often had that grid pattern reticule.

    The winter of 1939-40 was the coldest for 45 years with a CET of 1.5 and contained one of the coldest months on record. I think the photos could have been taken Dec 39 to Feb 40 as there is a lot of snow on the ground.
    The lack of defence in Dover -Folkstone makes me think maybe phoney war time as well.

    Here is a photo of a bunker on the French coast looking out across the channel to England, you can see a long range camera + other kit to spy on the land and ships. ww2 German coast watch British coast..jpg
