143 Field Park Sqn Royal Engineers / Driver C. J. Lockyear wounded 18th Aug.44

  1. Hi to you all! Do you think you could help me about one of the wounded men of the 143 Field Park Sq. on Aug. 18th 1944? Let me introduce myself: I am French and live in France (Brittany). I "guard" Commonwealth graves at the cemetary of Bayeux in Normandy; it means that I have committed myself to laying flowers and visiting "my" graves at least once a year. It also means that I carry research on the Commonwealth soldiers. I have already carried a thorough work about an Australian pilot (and devoted a Facebook page to him,.... in French I am afraid). I am now starting a new task, concerning driver Cyril John Lockyear (who happens to be an old friend of mine's uncle). How can I get as many détails as possible about his army years in the 143 Field Squadron? Probably in the War diary but I don't know how to find it. If it is on the internet, that would be fantastic! I attach the photo I took of his grave when I last went to Bayeux. I have since received a portrait sent by his nephews. Wishing you all the best, Martine

    Hi Martine
I am very late in joining the conversation about Driver Cyril Lockyear. Last October, 2020, I decided to write biographies of the people (war dead of WW2) whose names are on the War Memorial in Budleigh Salterton where I live. I decided to tackle this WW2 project chronologically, starting in September 1939. I have 62 names altogether and the first one is at WW2 75 - 10 September 1939 - ‘A gallant lad’s death in Tibet’: Lieutenant Richard Vivian Warren (1914-39), 1st Battalion, 15th Punjab Regiment, Indian Army I am now starting 1944, and the project is going well. My project is totally online and totally non-commercial. I am looking ahead to 2039 and the WW2 centenary, hoping that families will see what I have published, and will be able to contribute. Sadly, there are six names on the war memorial about whom there is no information apart from the name. But the internet is a powerful resource. I would love to have a copy of a photo of Cyril Lockyear, and to contact his nephews. Could you help? I am a former French teacher! Best wishes, Michael
