Thanks for posting this interview. I've read numerous accounts of Tarawa including "Tarawa Beachhead", and this interview confirms how terrible it was. It's hard to imagine just how bad it was.

 

I have been to Kiribati many times and found myself sitting on the Betio beaches and pondering those few days of carnage where so many young Americans perished. Rusting hulks of gun emplacements are still visible.
