    Hi all,

Have a man who served on the HMS Chiddingfold from 1941-45

Appears to be on the Malta convoys as of Sept. 1943

would he have had a loophole to qualify him for the Africa Star? Or would he have been given the Italy Star only OR BOTH?

    Cheers

    Dan

    Hi Dan,
He would have been entitled to the Italy Star but not the Africa Star as the qualifying period was 10th June 1940 - 12th May 1943.

What other medals would I be looking at? 39/45, Arctic, Atlantic, Italy, Defence and War???

    A quick look here.
    HMS Chiddingfold, escort destroyer
Would say 39 - 45 War medal and star, Atlantic, and poss Arctic depends on how far she went on the Arctic convoys.

Also trying to track down the ships log for the war I know ww2 army ones are at Kew ... Any guess on how to get the ww2 diary/log for the Chid?

The basic log of HMS Chiddingfold is as per the link in RCG's post above. If there are others then one of our naval members needs to provide assistance and clarity, hopefully one will be along - by that I mean I hope Hugh McLean picks up this thread

All the Destroyer logbooks after early January 1940 have been, with one or two exceptions, destroyed so no logbook for CHIDDINGFOLD.
You can see the ship's movements held at Kew in piece ADM 199/2550

The ship was involved in Arctic convoy JW51A and JW51B and he would have been eligible for the award as long as the ship sailed north of the Arctic Circle (66, 32 N).
ADM 199/2550 should confirm that for you.

Get hold of death certificate and send to mod medal office, they will confirm what medals he was entitled to and when issued

If never issued then official nok can still claim

    Hi Hugh,

Sorry chasing you on an old post ... where would you stand on this Seaman in receiving the Defence Medal and F&G clasp to the Atlantic star?

If I was to say he served on both The Chiddingfold and HMS Quantock

Your opinion on this medal and clasp being awarded would be most appreciated

    Cheers

    Dan

    Hi Dan,
    - I would say I need to know the dates he served on QUANTOCK :)
I don't think he is entitled to the Defence Medal for his service on CHIDDINGFOLD.

I think he could be entitled to the F & G Clasp but I would advise you take the route offered by James in his last post.

    Regards
    Hugh

I have photos upstairs with dates from lads saying best wishes all the best etc so I presume these could be the dates he left Chiddingfold for Quantock

Give me half hour and I will get dates to you on here

All photos dated early April 1944 so presume this is where he crossed into the Quantock

Just a query online following James' statement ...

1- I know they have already been issued (I know another relative has his medals ... but family has had a ruckus and don't talk so can't get info that way)

2 - he has only been dead since 2008

3 - the direct next of kin is Also uncontactable at present

Given that he's only been dead for 9 years ... would they still give me his entitlement?

    Hi,

Death, recent or otherwise, is not a bar to medal issue to an entitled relative but in light of your comment at 3 above it does not appear that you are the entitled relative. That person is the nearest surviving NOK - so IMHO you are therefore not entitled to claim the medals.
