I am wanting to learn as much as I can on Mr H Surridge who in June 1940 stayed in Bonnemare-Radepont with a Mrs Lefevre and then with madame Huguette Verhague, both in the Normandy region of Eure between June-December 1940. His name has cropped uo in the book 'La Resistance dans L'Eure. I have no other information but was hoping that all you chaps and lasses out there might be able to help. I have no service number or first name or type of aircraft he was flying etc. I don't know what squadron he belonged to.

Oliver Clutton-Brock's excellent "Footprints on the Sands of Time" lists 2 POWs with that surname:

    a) P/O AE Surridge, No. 158 Sqn, lost 30 March 1944,
    b) Sgt. GH Surridge, No. 15 Sqn, lost 25 April 1942, died of injuries 28 April 1942.

His "RAF Evaders" has no mention of this man in his list of RAF evaders. But on page 22 there is the story of a Sgt. Blaydon escaping St. Hippolyte internment camp on 2 April, 1941 with "Corporal HWC Surridge, AMPC, Corporal Frost (no record) and Pte. EJ Small, East Surreys". On 8 April, 1941 they were arrested in Spain, interrogated by a German in civilian clothes.

While Blaydon got home, via Gibraltar, six weeks later, the book does not tell the fate of Surridge or Small.

This may answer all questions: Corporal H W C Surridge (service number 6284681). Service: Army, AMPC [Auxiliary... | The National Archives

    MI9 nos 1 to 499

    Regards,

    Dave

Dave, HWC Surridge sounds like the man I am looking for. I think the author got it wrong saying RAF. I now have problem as I live in France and not sure when I will be able to go the archives.

This looks must be my man. Fleury is less than 5 miles away from Lisors where madame Verhague lived. Have you got a full copy of his file that I could have? I would love to learn more about him and see if I can get in touch with his relatives if there are any alive.

I wonder if we can find a photo of the man.

I noticed that in peacetime he was a 'Trounncer'. Does anyone know what Trouncers were at that time? I have never heard of the phrase.

It looks as though he might have been one of seven kids - maybe someone has created a family tree

Apparently a relatively archaic British term -

    Trouncer (British)
: a helper on a truck or delivery wagon

According to a genealogy site (Old Occupations - T) a Drayman's assistant (Brewers)

A better fit than the one given in the online 'Urban Dictionary'.

Blutto, that is fascinating. thanks for that. I wonder if we could find out which brewery he worked for, if he did work for a brewery.

What information is there on his regiment? Also, if he was in the land army why was the report owned by Bomber Command?

As he lived in Canterbury and was a 'trouncer' perhaps he worked for one of these labels:

    Brewers in Kent

Yes quite a few, I even started to look at the address given vs brewery locations.
