Following on from my previous request the trail of the investigation I'm following now leads me to RAF Watton' My question is similar to the previous one for MIldenhall, on what dates did the Luftwaffe attack Watton between June 1940 and December 1941, I have details of one failed attempt on the 18/02/41 by a HE111 but would very muck like to know of any other attacks with details if possible Thank you in advance Pete
Pete, I think the one on 18/2/41 was an HE111 what got lost. Interesting story though. Heinkel 111 shot down Watton ?????
nothing in ATB vol 1 ATB VOL 2 page 436-437 Mon Feb 17/18 1941 HE 111 shot down by PAC (parachute and cable rocket apparatus from RAF Watton crashed at Ovington Norfolk. ATB VOL 2 page 620 Sun May 11/12 1941 Ju 88 hit by flak from RAF Watton during an attack on Sutton Bridge crashed at Rectory farm no other details
Yes that's the the one I have details of RCG, the reason for me poking around asking about Luftwaffe attacks on Watton and Mildenhall is because my Father was at both stations with the 8th Bat Royal Norfolk's Coy U from the 23rd June 1940 to the 4th of January 1942 they were engaged in airfield defense at both airfields. He was on duty on top of the Watton control tower manning a Leiws gun when the He111 made it's low pass along the flight line machine gunning everything in site. He said that the whole airfield let loose at the bomber but without seeing any damage the RAF latter told the 'Brown Jobs' it had crashed some distance away. At Mildenhall he recalled being on guard duty in the bomb dump and watching a lone raider bomb the main grass strip. Pete
