258 and 254 Corps Delivery Squadron RAC

Discussion in 'Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy' started by Arnold van Loozenoord, Feb 26, 2017.

  1. Hi, I'm looking for information about the 258 and 254 Corps Delivery Squadrons RAC. My aunt's father, Thomas Fox, was in the units from 4 July 1944 till 27 February 1946. She is interested in where the units went in Western Europe. Her dad past away in 2003. As many veterans he didn't speak much about his time in the army.
The main question is what did the units do and where were they in WWII? If anybody can help me or send me in the right direction it will be highly appreciated. We do have a copy of his service and casualty form.
Some extra information: according to my aunt he did drive a tank at a certain moment. He was sent to the Ardennes to counter the Battle of the Bulge. His wedding was postponed because of this. He strated as a gunner. He was in Gibraltar at a certain point (975 defence Battery R.A.) Went to Europe on LST US 380
    Regards, Arnold

    Hi

Used Lee's Search engine to find these war diaries, located at National Archives, Kew :

WO 176/194 GIBRALTAR: Royal Artillery: 18 Coast Defence Regiment. 1940 Dec.-1944 Mar.

WO 171/887 258 Corps Delivery Squadron 1944 Jan.- Dec.
WO 171/4729 258 Corps Delivery Squadron 1945 Jan.- Dec.

  3. Hi dbf, I found those too. Problem is that they don't tell you in advance what they have. It is a bit of a guess what they have. And it takes some time to get a response.

I'm afraid that is always the case: until you see the file, you will not know what info it contains, or how many pages there are.

I take it that you have applied through TNA?

Their copying charges are a lot higher than if you engaged a private researcher. There are a couple of forum members who go to Kew, who can copy for much less.

Both squadrons were part of 2 Armoured Replacement Group by early 1946 were command Garrison Headquarters Troops British Army of the Rhine

At this time 254 Corps Delivery Squadron was admin 8th Corps District so were probably in Hamburg, 258 Corps Delivery Squadron was admin 7th Area Sub Area who were in Antwerp, they were responsible for delivery of tanks between the channel ports and the BAOR armoured units, disbanded by June 1946

  6. Hi Steve, Thanks for this info. When I look at his service form, he was with the 258. That makes sense because his wife was in Eindhoven and he probably in Antwerp. He was home ( England ) from 28 Feb 1946.
