Flying Helmet repair

Discussion in 'WW2 Militaria' started by James Atkinson, Mar 16, 2017.

  1. Hello everyone ,

I hope it's ok to post this message if not please remove.
I am currently working towards my PPL in a Tiger Moth. I have a wonderful Type C helmet which works. But I'd like to have it serviced and any parts that need it replaced. Can anyone point me in the direction of someone who could help ?

    Many thanks
    James

Is this primarily a question of leather/fabric renovation, or are there definitely missing/broken 'hard' parts that need replacing?
I know an exceptionally talented leather worker, but presumably scarcity of parts may mean you'd be better asking at places like Shuttleworth etc.

I'd be interested in expert advice on leather preservation/treatment as I've got a decent-condition Type B that I've left alone for fear of making things worse.

  4. The leather is in great condition. It's really a question of rewiring the helmet to meet current / modern fittings.

In that case. He is not your man.
Quite seriously, I'd have thought shooting off an email to the Shuttleworth collection might get results. If there was ever a community of people likely to have a higher than average level of leather flying helmet ownership and preservation, they might well be it.
