2701610 Guardsman DUNCAN CAMPBELL Scots Guards 278062 Stalag 9a Altengrabow, Saxony-Anhalt This was my Papa who was born in Uddingston, Lanarkshire on 28 April 1914 and lived until 13 June 2002, aged 88. He was a glass cutter to trade and worked for Pilkingtons. He was marched to Magdeburg from the POW Camp in December 1944 for a mastoid ear operation and he was 6 ft 2 in and was only 7 stones at the time and his fellow POW's wished him well, as they really did not think they would see him return. A fellow POW had drawn my Papa in a sketch of him lying in his bed and had written "A Penny For You, Dunc". He told me that there was a photo of Hitler and Mussolini in his hospital room and when he was expatriated his own General Practitioner said that this was the neatest operation of this kind he had ever seen, so we'll done to the German surgeon. He ended up with two hearing aids and tinnitus in later life. He was a Bren gunner and was captured north of Anzio, Italy in February 1944. His colleague Jimmy Tracey from Greenock was killed in action. The story goes that they were to lead ahead and they were taking turns to go first and they tossed a coin and Tracey had to run up the hill and was killed.
No problem at all. Is there anything else I can assist with? I have a scanned letter that I could add that was sent from my Gran to my Papa at the POW camp.
I am out in Anzio 4-7 May 17 walking exactly the ground that your father walked himself. If you are interested in joining that group, do say. I suspect that he was involved in the 24 Guards Brigade breakout operation on the night of 29-30 Jan 44 that created a deep lozenge into the German line. This was then counter attacked and all hell let loose over the next five weeks. Do you know his date of capture? There were no hills at Anzio just very long gentle rises in the otherwise flat terrain. Regards
Hello Minden, I hope you have a profitable trip to Anzio. No hills but plenty of gullies - if you were leading an advance out of a gully how would you describe it to others? Regards, Vitellino
Wow, that is a lot of POW's, I don't suppose you counted how many? My grandfather escaped from stalag 8b via ARBEITSKOMMANDO 768 KUMAU on June 28th 1944. I have been trying to figure out what sort of labor camp 768 was, but to no avail.
Hi, This site has it down as E768 Kumau but like most of the working camps it doesn't describe the type of work. Diane has put a lot of Guards POW liberation questionnaires on this site - whilst it might be time consuming and a shot in the dark - you may find some mention of this work camp activities. Working Parties Or you could email the Lambinowice Museum? Museum / Centralne Muzeum Jeńców Wojennych w Łambinowicach-Opolu I have a worse conundrum - my relative lists a Stalag VIIIB working camp numbered and named in a letter from ICRC but it doesn't feature on any list! Good Luck Steve Y
That's a fantastic list of POWs...and thank you for sharing all that research. I may have another name to add to the list. My cousin, Frank Lee (1/5th Bn Welsh Regt), was repatriated from (I believe) STALAG IX-B on 11 April 1945 but died of malnutrition a few hours later. The 6 pallbearers at his funeral on 17 April 1945 were all ex-POWs from Frank's home town (St.Helens, Lancashire) who were repatriated at the same time. One of the pallbearers was identified as a "Gdsm McGough" of the Scots Guards. Frank's military records did not identify the POW camps in which he was incarcerated. I only found out that he was in STALAGs XI-B and VIII-C from the index card created for him by his captors. I suspect Frank marched to STALAG IX-B when STALAG VIII-C was evacuated on 8 February 1945. Given that they were liberated around the same time, it's entirely possible that Gdsm McGough was also at STALAGs VIII-C and IX-B. Dunno if the above is of use/interest...but I share it in hopes that it might be. Cheers, Mark
Guardsman Cain 2695863, Gdsm Ferguson 2695863 & Gdsm Hannah 2695856 were in G Patrol LRDG. They were in a party of 5 captured 25/11/42. Gdsm Tristain in that group was a POW in Italy and escaped to Switzerland when Italy surrendered in 1943. I have no information on where Gdsm Frazer was held POW.
Hi, W Cain 2695863 is shown at Stalag 11B on the 1945 official POW list WO392/1 at U.K. National Archives. J Ferguson 2695935 (not as you’ve written in your post) is shown at Stalag 344 on the same list. It’s the previous Stalag 8B at Lamsdorf E Hannah 2695856 is show as being at Caserne E Mute Trieste (Italy). That’s a new one on me but forum member vitellino may be able to assist you further. You may find more if you search for them in file WO416 (German POW Index Cards) via U.K. National Archives Discovery Search Engine. Steve EDIT TO ADD L/Sjt 2695466 N D P Fraser is not shown as a POW.
Off the top I think Hannah was being held in some barracks, Caserma E.Muti., in Trieste. Will see what I can find out and edit. Vitellino He was being held in German-run camp Stalag 339, which was located in the barracks (Caserma) E. Muti in via Rossetti. Trieste
penned his name and address: A black and white portrait sketch was quite likely sent to his family in Scotland; no further details known.
