Hi there. I just found and joined the forum. So much to read. My interest in ww2 was fuelled by living on the outskirts of the abandoned Cluntoe Airfield of Ardboe Co.Tyrone. It is slowly being swallowed up by businesses and construction. The control tower and most of the runways still exist if you know where to look. I plan to photograph the entire site sometime before it disappears for good. Does anyone have old-time photos or info of Cluntoe or the Sister site of Toome airfield?
Hi Paul Welcome to WW2talk. A very interesting piece about the Airfield here. Your Place And Mine - Tyrone - Cluntoe Airfield A bit more information here. Cluntoe Non members cannot see photos.
Thanks, I have came across them websites and posts before, there seems to be so little documentation especially photographic of the usaaf in N.Ireland during WW2. Does anyone have the blueprints for Cluntoe such as the one posted for Toome. If you place the Toome airfield site plan over a photo as it stands today. There is so little recognisable, the control tower has been demolished, the runways have roads running over them. Whereas Cluntoe is more or less complete, the taxiways and runways are all recognisable. On one of my walks I found runway marker lights and cabling still in the ground. Footprints of previous buildings and the hardstands. The control tower is absoutely amazing. I have dreams of buying it for restoration, but the owner will not sell nor will he do anything with it.
I learned to drive a car on both airfields in the early "sixities." Both airfields now very much commercialized. Drive past Toome airfield regurarly. Wesley Wright
