Apologies for the anglo-centric nature of this post but I spotted this BBC archived programme on the iPlayer: BBC iPlayer - In the Highest Tradition: Episode 1 Called "In The Highest Tradition" - it's a series of programmes about the British Army and its traditions. As well as the respective story lines, it's almost a period piece in its own right - very interesting for a youngster like me (albeit I'm only on Episode 1 of 6). Narrated by Ian Wooldridge, which gives you an idea of its vintage - 1989. best

BBC Four - Regimental Stories, The Royal Welsh and for those rather perversely watching TV on an actual TV, the Regimental Stories series is showing on BBC HD next Monday at 10pm..(I thought it was the same series but I'm clearly mistaken.) Ep 1 - The Royal Welsh Every year, the Royal Welsh celebrate the 1879 Battle of Rorke's Drift where 122 British soldiers survived an attack by 4,000 Zulu warriors. This documentary tells the real story behind the epic film Zulu and shows how regimental history continues to inspire and motivate new recruits to this day.
Along with tradition the army is made up of a complex system from the King, through his government, the Council and Staff. Here the Army List shows the 'works' from HM the King and all of his British and Commonwealth Land Forces. Regular, Territorial, Yeomanry,Cadet forces etc. From the Directorate of Armour to the Inspector of Regimental colours! Officers' and Warrant Officer Class 1 only, listed for units. Canada,Australia,New Zealand, Indian Army.Burma etc..... Army list Handy for looking up names eg:- Major (T) JDG Niven - Rifle Brigade:
Really enjoyed this... 1989 series which delves into the world of British military tradition. In the Highest Tradition - BBC Which is a nice little gem on the BBC Iplayer. With the first episode focusing (among others) quite a bit on both Lancers and Hussars. I was looking for a full synopsis of what was in each episode but didn't see one (yet online). Though each episode's title and the brief BBC synopsis on the Iplayer for each episode at least gives a guide. I've only watched it though once (so far), but was a bit surprised that it didn't seem to mention the Yeomanry and their various traditions etc. Perhaps I missed it, or it's just not covered. I'm not sure if something similar has ever been done for the Yeomanry regiments? All the best, Rm,.
