Yesterday I posted up a response to a thread concerning (how would you get out of Dunkirk real or imagined) I can't remember the actual title. It was posted up by a new member and there were several replies. One member posted everyone escaped by sea. Then other responses were made one of which was from Drew5233 concerning an escapee through France and Spain i.e. not by sea. Then I posted up a similar story of an escaped prisoner of war captured during the Dunkirk evacuation and received a like from CL1. I thought I would look again at the post today to see if any other escapee stories or responses were posted up. But the post and all responses have disappeared. When people respond to posts often they have spent some time researching answers and don't expect them to disappear. What happened?
The original post was by a new member who asked the same question elsewhere & I looked into their posting history around the internet. Felt it was a bit spammy so Banned them. Had a 'report' about it too from another member so binned the entire thread.
If there's a thread about Dunkirk escapes other than by sea, happy to reinstate interesting posts... or put up as a new thread.
Hi, I was the member who "reported" the OP in the now "missing/deleted" topic as I felt the tone of his post was disrespectful to those who lost their lives at Dunkirk and was in bad taste inviting hypothetical and humorous responses about "escapes from Dunkirk". I shared RCG's view that we don't do hypothetical responses here. At the time I made my report I don't think the posts by researchingreg and Andy had been posted. I had no issue with their factual posts which I found were informative. If they can be reinstated in line with Von Poop's suggested title "Dunkirk Escapes other than by Sea" it would be a good thing. Good to know we have moderators here who don't mess about - any dodgy history and ban them. I must admit I was one of those who posted a response. Apologies if any offense was caused. Shaun
Please, don't apologise for your joke on the converted thread, mate. I don't personally give a toss about jokes and passing silliness in the right place; all fine and improve the place to my eye. If it all gets too what-iffy though, our culture remains entirely Vogon about the whole business: (That's Owen, by the way. I'm so much prettier.)
For information, the OP started an identical thread on our sister site ww2f.com where they tend to take things less seriously - and they do get involved in what ifs - and there have been a number of replies. Not everyone's cup of tea but there you go! I also felt the OP was disrespectful in possibly a naive way but, as discussed here, there is a more serious side worthy of discussion.
I'm glad that you used the inverted commas VP as there can have been little escape or evasion from within the Dunkirk perimeter other than by sea.
I put 'Dunkirk' in those all the time now. I blame you bastards, with all this 'detail' and 'knowledge'.
