I am trying to find details of NFS personnel involved in Operation Pluto. My father served in the NFS, but all we know is that he said he was in the Blitz in London, and that he also worked on Operation Pluto. I have been unable to find any reference to NFS involvement on any of the sites dealing with this Operation. Anyone with any info please ??

If by Op Pluto you are referring to the 'Pipeline Underwater Transportation of Oil' or as is often wrongly termed 'Pipeline Under the Ocean', I can advise that on the Isle of Wight I have come across two references to NFS members carrying out fire protection activities at strategic points in both Ryde and Sandown during pumping operations. To the best of the knowledge I have the role was restricted to standing by at potential weak points in the system to ensure they were immediately on the spot if anything went awry. One matter documented in a young Ryde firemen's diary recounted one day when they were carrying out this task where the pipeline came ashore at Cornwall Slip, that Ryde's Company Officer Max Heller had returned to the station to fetch further foam extinguishers and was driving back down the hill towards the sea front when one fell and activated in his car; much to amusement of the men he returned a soapy mess with the foam pouring out of the windows as he arrived.
