I'll try to post pics if that's a possibility of not here is what I have. Port division - Devonport Official Number - JX653885 (is this his military number or the ports?) Hello Steve and welcome. His service number D/JX653885 - The D stands for his home port division in his case it was Devonport. HMS RALEIGH - training base in Plymouth. HMS DRAKE - Naval barracks in Devonport. St Angelo - Naval HQ in Malta. The names in brackets were actual sea-going ships and they would have been attached to HMS ST ANGELO who would have handled their accounts. HMS TUMULT - a T class destroyer HMS PROVIDENCE - minesweeper. Regards Hugh
I believe his records may be incomplete then as I know he served on 4 ships. A friend of my dads worked for the MOD at Filton Abbey wood and managed to get pictures and records of the ships he was on. I always remember the 4 pictures being on the wall but after his death I'm not sure what happened to them or the ship records.
And thank you for the welcome I should add I'm compiling a family tree and I'm hoping to gather as much info on his service to add into it. Thank you for your reply
Admiralty Fleet Order this PDF file gives a mention to 5250. http://www.navy.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/5239-5357.pdf In my experience with RN records I find them very poor with limited information. Usually the accounting bases and shore training bases are shown and in brackets the ships or tenders he was on but I have found seamen who went on other drafts not accounted for on their records which can make medal verification difficult. Regards Hugh
Hi Steve, and welcome to my world. If you haven't had any luck, feel free to drop into my fb page 'Forgotten Naval Ratings of WW2'. It's a place for descendants of lads whose families have more questions than answers
