That's great... I first contacted Charles Syner and his brother Steven last Thursday and Charles responded that night. So it's all sorted!! Yay!

No word via Facebook from the possible grandchild of Vera and looking at the Electoral Rolls I can't find any entries for the first grandsons name and the second son there was an ER entry for Stockton Upon Tees on Findmypast, but from 2002 and nothing after and can't see any FB profile with a birth region of Birmingham.

I've been looking at Vera M. Holland, one of the daughters of Ernest and Nellie/Ellen. I noted that in 1947 she married a Herbert Whittall and I felt that his name was, perhaps, unusual enough to follow up with a possible telephone/address search. I've come up with the following: WHITTALL - BIRMINGHAM - BritishPhoneBook.com - British Phone Book - UK Phone Book - United Kingdom Directory Enquiries - Phone Directory - Residential Numbers - Britsh Telecom Now, I live in Gibraltar at the moment so it'd be rather expensive to phone from here...but I wonder if it would be worth a phone call from someone in the UK?
A shot in the dark, I know, but I found someone in Norwich this way last year for a similar search and located a lady who was the sister of a lost crew-member...still alive after so many years! As the possible son-in-law Herbert may well be alive and kicking in Birmingham.

I'll leave this here as a 'just in case' possibility.

    Cheerio for now,

    Gill

    Hi Gill,

I've emailed a Birmingham newspaper to see if we can enlist their help.

Given Vera is in her 90s I'd not want to upset her over the phone and at the moment we don't know for definite she is the offspring of Ernest & Ellen/Nellie Hunt.

I'm sure the paper would be able to verify this at the local registers office, but then again there were two possible marriages for her fairly close together.

Fingers crossed the paper takes an interest in the story. I'm awaiting confirmation of acceptance on a Facebook memories page for Birmingham and if the paper aren't able to assist I'll see if the folks on FB can offer some help.

Will update as soon as I hear anything concrete.

A journalist called from Birmingham Mail this afternoon and I've emailed him all we know so far. Coincidentally it's the same newspaper that printed the engagement announcement back in January '41 that might have been Ernest.

Hopefully they can confirm from the two possible marriages for Vera that she shared the same parentage as Ernest.

Hi Gill, from GRO I thought too that was Leslie's marriage, but the births were so numerous with the maiden name and with there being no obvious familial names for the children born after the marriage year, I thought that was a dead end.

I'll pass this on as another line of enquiry. Nice find.

I had another thought and emailed the newspaper to see if they hold details of who purchased the engagement notice for the Ernest John Holland back in January 1941.

It stated he was the only son of Mrs. Holland and the late E. Holland.

If the ad was purchased by mother Ellen/Nellie Holland, we can rule out at least that Ernest had male siblings, ruling out births for Sydney & Leslie.

I'm hanging up my ancestry research hat after this search I swear. After 30 years of typing, this tennis elbow is telling me to pack it in.

Please remember that this is a public site that is also patrolled by Bots, Andriods and all sorts of funnily named futuristic automatons, and they are looking for anything they can use, in fact its not only this site, any public accessible site is dangerous.

We do not know if any of these people are directly related to the crew of the aircraft, and if we did then that information should be directed specifically to the originator of the request.

Personal details, especially those of living people are best kept in the Conversations part of this site - accessed via the Inbox option at the top right hand corner of the page and is Private - i.e. away from prying eyes.
Most of the personal details that can be seen on this site are for people who are already no longer with us, the more personal and living information is generally provided by the relative themselves.

I have removed them, TD... I think that is the best way. I'll bear that in mind in future... thank you. I allowed my enthusiasm to run away with me and was thoughtless. Apologies.

Its just as general researchers and more importantly to this site and its members we have a duty of care to ensure we do not open potential problems when we post information or details.

We have had instances when searches have been made but the results have not been posted as there have been no relatives either contacted or known, and to post the result could offend direct relatives if they ever found the post.

I think the Ernest search has been one of the most frustrating I can recall round here. Fingers crossed the newspaper can confirm some details. I hit lucky using this method to trace the children of my great uncle after they'd left Glasgow.

I've never come across two births so close together in the same area, sharing the same middle initial and exact same fathers forename. Its been a challenge and a half.

As we have found previously - sometimes the information is just not there to be found.

We have found 5 out of the 6 which I think is a pretty good result. Lets hope at sometime in the future the missing family start looking for their relative and come across this thread. Its one of the reasons I hope that when Andre finalises all his paperwork that this site has a mention and maybe this thread will be completed.

The newspaper in Birmingham have put me in contact with a military history buff. He knows of RAF books in the Birmingham library. He also told me the paper ran an article on Sunday about Ernest and he is going to scan it and email it to me.

Using the link Geoff posted the other day for the Birmingham Bereavement service, I think Ernest's parents maybe buried in Quinton Cemetery, but I've asked TD to verify their death dates via Ancestry. The ages fit via GRO, but both burials happen a month before the GRO entry, so I'm not 100% certain yet.

If it is them, we could see if there's a headstone for the parents with an inscription. With a bit of luck it might hint at siblings for Ernest.

Found an email address for Quinton Cemetery in Birmingham to see if that's Ernest's parents buried there in 1934 & 1967.

Fingers crossed it's them and a headstone may give us a clue to follow.
