Hello, I am searching for further information about the raid by the SBS on the Island of Cherso in the Dalmations on 17/3/1945 , there seems to be little information about this ! I am interested as Trooper Grainger Laverick was awarded an MM by thr Commander of the Special Boat service Maj J S F Mcbeth. Any information would be very much appreciated, cheers Paul
Many thanks Drew that's great , hopefully someone will have more details of the raids as well as i'm struggling to locate any. What i do know is Grainger Laverick was originally with the 16th/5th Lancers in the desert before tranfer to Special Forces. The Officer who signed the recommendation was Maj James Steward Fraser Macbeth MC RA attached to the SBS who must have been on the raid as well , has anyone any further info on him ? regards Paul
If you ID the SBS unit let me know - If I've got the units war diary I'll look up the battle for you.
Just mucking around on Google, and this was an attack to demolish the bridge at Ossero linking the islands of Cherso & Lussin. But it occurred on the 18th of March - probable that the date was entered incorrectly when the paperwork was raised in mid April. Also if the raid was led by Captain McGonigal then I presume that Major MacBeth raised the paperwork on his recommendation. McGonigal,AJ,113419,Lt,Ty/Captain,Royal Ulster Rifles,MC In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the field.(LG.02.03.44) Special Boat Squadron (S Detachment) Aug.1944 (Lt - Cap) http://www.specialforcesroh.com/showthread.php?29036-McGonigal-Ambrose-Joseph http://www.gutenberg.us/articles/ambrose_mcgonigal
I have a copy of Captain Macbeth's MC citation and a photo of him and a brief synopsis of his time with the SBS which I will post for your information next week. Cheers Arnhem
Attached is a copy of Capt J S R Macbeth's citation. The photograph is him on the left in the peaked cap and was taken in 1943 at Athlit. Sorry about the delay in adding it. Cheers Arnhem
