By coincidence I've just read an account by Cpl Ernest Galley (A Coy, 2 DLI on the Donbaik front during the First Arakan Campaign):

One day, the Japs started shelling, the shells fell behind our position. We could see the guns firing. We asked for artillery support but couldn't get any response over the field telephone or by the Number 18 wireless set. Our platoon sergeant joked, "I can get Henry Hall and his dance orchestra on the BBC, but not company HQ."

As an aside, the Ayad Al-whoever company currently engaged in wrecking the house next door with those new windows should be absolutely ashamed of themselves...

Quite agree !! My apologise for that, I did try to avoid including the mess next door as much as possible, but I was in a bit of a hurry ( Nothing new there ! ) having made a detour from my assigned route. It always looks different through the camera's view-finder, and you end-up getting more than you thought. Also not any good at Cropping photographs, or whatever it's called...

Just realised that my "Here's to the next time" remark on my previous posting simply showed my age :)
That was the title of the song with which Henry Hall finished all his programs.

I remember listening to Henry Hall and his Guest Night........"Heres to the next time" as he signed off.

What a wonderful informative device and source of music a radio was....ours was bakelite Philips.... LW MW and SW, latter reception full of mush.....listening to the 9 o'clock news..... a time never missed.

Remember all the stations listed as I used to pan the stations.....good for geography lessons ....St Pauli... where was that I used to think.

Yes and there was Geraldo,I think he was the brother of Ambrose,I believe, another big band leader......"Geraldo... Hello again.... we're on the radio again". My introduction to the big bands and first class vocal back ups.

Remember seeing Ted Heath and his band at the Tower Ballroom,Blackpool in 1948.His vocalists were Lita Roza,Dennis Lotis and later, Dickie Valentine.....more than that, it was possible to hear distinctly their lyrics.
