Today at 1-00pm, Friday 28 June 2013, the Shoreham Aircraft Museum, Kent, helped to unveil a new memorial to an Airman of WW2 killed in action. The aim of their project is to privately raise funds to commemorate men killed within a 10 miles radius of Shoreham. This is the 7th memorial to be dedicated since the project started in 2006. Spidge has posted details of this man on one of his threads and here is a link with more details. Hi Rob, Fantastic photos and seemingly a great day for all. Thank you for all your efforts and hope you enjoyed the day. Cheers Geoff
Absoloutely wonderful photographs there, many thanks for showing them. I have some from another similar occasion. When I can find them I'll post 'em up.
I went to the dedication of the first memorial, the year before, a mile from where I live. My neighbour saw the plane crash when she was a young girl. He was a also 92 Squadron Pilot, killed the same day as Oldfield.
Some wonderful photos there. I have come across the name Carew Reynell before whilst researching some Gallipoli matters. Richard's father was killed there in late August 1915. It seems that tragedy was never far from the family during both wars. Adelaide's war widow philanthropist gave until the end Scott
interestingly an article here about the pilot Flight Lieutenant Richard Carew Reynell, of 43 Squadron, died on 7th September 1940 when his fighter was shot down over Blackheath on the first day of the Blitz. His aircraft exploded into three pieces and he was blown from his cockpit without having the chance to open his parachute. His body fell near The Point on Blackheath and the memorial was unveiled in Point Hill Park Point Hill
I did place a thread here with photos of the initial memorial cemetery with family etc however having trouble tracking it down. This link gives his history: Blitzwalkers: Flight Lieutenant Richard Carew Reynell RAF Cheers Geoff
The Mounties to the rescue again. Thanks Dave The original dedication photos in 2013. There is a family plot also at Brookwood. His son sadly died at the age of 34. His father Lt Colonel Carew Reynell died age 32 and is believed to be buried at Hill 60 Cemetery.
