Hi I am researching the battle for Termoli (Italy Oct 3-6, 1943) and find reference to 10, 11 and 12 Tps of B Sqdn but never 9 Tp. Am I right that 9 Tp was in B Squadron? If so, does anyone know of anyone who served in this unit at Termoli or before?
Hello Ropey, might be worth having a look here: Numbering of Scout and Assault Troops in Recce Regts Courtesy of RecceMitch the 56 Recce diaries contain a report on the battle: http://ww2talk.com/index.php?media/resized-p2000025.7159/ A few pages further on are the reports of 11 and 38 Infantry Brigades.
Thanks Tony. Strangely that source gives a different numbering for 56th Recce than the WDs for Termoli. There it is explicit that Tps 10-12 were part of B Sqdn. My assumption would be that 9 was the Assault Tp but maybe 13 was the fourth troop. If the same is true of A Sqdn it would be Tps 5-8 (or 6-9), and C Sqdn 13-16 (or 14-17). 1-4 (or 1-5) would therefore be admin, mortars, AT and sigs, in whatever order. Did 56th reorganise after Oct '43? Why would they bother? If I rephrase Q2, does anyone have any personal knowledge of what the 4th troop (either 9 or 13) of B Sqdn did at Termoli?
Have I misread something - the link I sent, which was from the diaries, did say that 10 - 12 were B Sqn (+ 13)
It'll be me getting side tracked Tony! OK, 13 Tp confirmed, but not mentioned in relation to Termoli...
At the time of Monte Cassino, 17 troop were C Squadrons assault troop, see: http://ww2talk.com/index.php?media/resized-p2170639.7635/ Perhaps it could be assumed that the other assault troops were 9 for A Sqn and 13 for B Sqn.
