    Hello All,

Was at The Cenotaph today to see the 3 Veterans from WW1, very moving to see all the poeple remembering them. The Soldiers that were not so lucky to make it back, one of the Veterans tried to get up and place the wreath himself. I also think that Johnson Beharry VC was helping one of the Veterans also helping was Flight Lieutenant Michelle Goodman DFC

Diana can you contact I have some photos for you from The Field of Rememberance at Wastminster

Does anyone know if the Germans marked today with any special events?

Good question. Just read this on wiki:

    Germany

In Germany, Armistice or Remembrance Day is unknown. Public memory of World War I in Germany is generally scarce. Moreover, 11 November would be seen as an inappropriate date for such a holiday, as it traditionally marks the beginning of the German carnival. However, Volkstrauertag is commemorated. Originally this was on the fifth Sunday before Easter, but since 1952, has been celebrated two Sundays before the beginning of Advent. It has never been celebrated in the church since both the major German churches have their own festivals for commemorating the dead (All Souls Day in the case of the Roman Catholic church, Ewigkeitssonntag, or "Eternity Sunday" in the case of the Lutheran church. Both festivals also fall in November.)

Does anyone know if the Germans marked today with any special events?
I heard on BBC News 24 that Prince Charles & Sarkozy were off to a German cemetery after the events at Verdun.

    Owen,

Marcus has already beaten me to the answer regarding your query.

Volkstrauertag is this Sunday, 16th November.

Totensonntag is the following Sunday on the 23rd November.
This is more for remembering family day.

I find the 11th hour kind of stressful myself, I can't imagine what it's like for those with more personal connections to the fallen. :poppy:

Here is a naive question, prompted by your posts. In the US, 11 November is Veterans Day. Strictly speaking it is a day for surviving veterans. But of course, the general public (and media) often expands that to memorialize the war dead. However, we also have a day for that - Memorial Day, 30 May - which is for remembrance of the dead. It is frequently expanded to include surviving veterans. I guess Americans don't see these things in rigid ways.

How do Briton's view 11 November? I gather from the post that it is to remember the war dead.

    Regards, Marc
