I think someone needs to do some research before he prices things !!!!

The Army At War THE EIGHTH ARMY United Kingdom 1944 - eBay (item 140456120808 end time Oct-19-10 20:10:40 PDT)
First off, Ford At War, a very nice little find indeed! A very fair price indeed for what I think of as a fairly scarce publication. I did in fact pick one up a few years ago not that I considered it a part of the official series but purely for it's fascinating content. I can't remember how much I paid for it and I can't remember who I lent it to either! Sadly, I have started to hold things a little tighter to home recently after losing some rather good stuff to "borrowers". No, Mr. James does not make mention of it in his other publications either but I think that it should be on any collectors list. I also think that some of the post-war publications merit inclusion too as they deal with real time problems we had to cope with resulting directly from the war effort and it's aftermath. I am being very gentle with that last statement by the way.
The copy of The Eighth Army for sale on e-bay for $745.00 "Buy It Now" deserved a little research. It seems it is being offered by a company called Flatsigned Books. They are vendors of what they call "Real Signed Books". I believe that this may well be the copy, believed lost many years ago, which carries the handwritten dedictions....

Happy Birthday Erwin, Very best wishes, Monty

    With a retort,

I am returning this pile of twaddle as you may be in need of it for purposes other than reading when my new Tigers are delivered, Rommel

Maybe it is worth the asking price but be careful, there are a lot of scams out there.
    Kind Regards, John

Hi, thanks for this, I agree with your assessment :)

Haha ! very good  Well, a signed copy might be more in that ballpark...but I don't see any signature, which presumably they would show if it was...you can rest assured I will not be making an offer.

I just discovered this thread. I have only a few of these, The Tiger Kills and the Tiger Triumphs, the Abyssinian Campaign one and another one I don't see here so far, its got a War Artists pics with the desert war and contains pictures of mixtures of British and Indian troops drawn in pencil. Wish I could remember the title, and it has the right "look" to be in the series, but appears not to be! :D

Mind you, compared to some of what appears to be called the "extended" collection there seems to be very little to link them together, except the HMSO printed them. It also printed a lot of paperwork for the forces for training. Is this just a list of what someone decided should be lumped together into a 'collection'..? :D
    Hi Matt,
I have just found a copy of The Tiger Strikes on e-bay. Asking 9.99 for it plus postage. This would complete the trilogy of "Tigers" for you. Only a day or so left with no bids if you are interested.

Although not quite an HMSO book, I was left this book by my grandfather.
It records the birth and battles of 6 AGRA. It still has its original string binding. I am in the process of 'capturing' the book electronically for anyone who wishes a copy. Not sure what format it will end up as, probably a pdf, although might try and make an e-book. Any thoughts?

What a wonderful cover Kev. Great idea to share the contents of what must be a pretty scarce book. The pdf format would be fine for me. Not too savvy re: e-books yet! I'm sure I'll get there though otherwise I guess I will be left behind.

One of the main advantages of having "newbies" join this site is the way it revives some the old threads such as this one.

Well done to all involved and what super collections these paper-backs make !

I've finally managed to scan all the pages, keep the size down to a workable level and kept as much detail as possible.
Hope everyone can use it in some way to maybe 'fill in some gaps' in their history records.
If anyone wants individual pages or better quality pictures, please PM me and I'll forward them on.

Ted, Sorry for late reply, computer problems!!!!!. I don not know how many books were printed. There is no mention of Printer, Date, Copies or anything. Maybe just an independant printer asked to do the book for the guys that requested it. Therefore, may only be a few left.

I have recently been trying to create a better reference site for HMSO publications in general that are related to WW2 from the catalogues in the British Library as a guide for collectors. ( http://www.teamwalton.co.uk/eb/SS.php ).

e.g., Most of the Ministry of Information ones can be found at ( http://www.teamwalton.co.uk/eb/D.php?D=MOI )
eg, The Army at War series are listed at ( http://www.teamwalton.co.uk/eb/T.php?T=AAW ).

My estimate of what is "related to WW2' , has changed as I added more years, :), so I am going back to improve it.

COLLABORATION REQUEST: I was wondering if anybody else would want to co-operate to help provide images of items for this reference site as I only have ones from my collection. ( NB, they can only be copies of items OWNED by users).

    Dave

PS. You will notice that there is small commercial aspect in this web-site as I have provided a small set of books as eBooks on iBooks. This is realistically just for coffee money , :), as the time taken far outweighs the benefit to me, but as I added value to the texts, I had to charge. (nb, extracted people, organisation, coloured maps, etc)

    Different series, Clive.
These are the WW2 contemporary ones. I'll start a thread on the 1980s-ish others.
