A variation on the dream theme was used in McDonogh's The Defense of Hill 781 (1988). The friendly forces are trapped in a battlefield purgatory, as a consequence of earthly misdemeanours, until they earn their trip to heaven. There is a significant structural difference in that the lessons learned are applied to a sequence of different missions, not refighting the same battle half a dozen times.

May 1942. The small English village of Bramley End is visited by a detachment of about 60 Royal Engineers. They are ostensibly there on an exercise but are in actual fact a detachment of German paratroopers, the advance guard of Hitler's invasion of England. Some of the villagers figure out their true identities but before they can do anything all the villagers are held prisoner by the Germans. Will the villagers be able to get word out of the threat? The fate of England depends on them.
“Oh, you great beast! You great bullying brute you, knocking a child about! You're a disgrace to your uniform! Why, you're no better than a German, - that's what you are!”

The soldiers are wearing the Tulip formation sign of the Lincolnshire County Division - later the 212th Independent Infantry Brigade under command of 54th Division.
10th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment served in the Brigade (7 October 1940 — 14 July 1942)

Brilliant film. First saw it when I was about 17 and in sixth form at school. I was studying British & European history which covered the war period. The next day in class we used the film as the basis of a discussion of what we might have done if we had lived at the time and the UK was invaded.
