Does anyone know how many POW camps run by the Japanese there were in total and where they were located. Are there any surviving records that tell us this and if there are such records, would they contain the names of the servicemen kept in them ??. Steven
Steven, When considering FEPOWs I always recommend getting in touch with the wonderful people at COFEPOW (Children and Families of Far East Prisoners of War). They are always so helpful and knowledgeable. www.cofepow.org.uk They helped enormously when we commemorated Thetford Grammar School FEPOWs in November 2001. Regards, David
David. Thank you for that lead,i will most certainly try them.I wil let you know what they are able to tell me. Steven
The most authorative listing of Japanese POW camps and hellships is to be found in Prisoners of the Japanese in World War II by Van Waterford, a Dutchman who survived the sinking of the Junyo Maru in 1944 when 5,500 POWs - most of them Indonesian - perished. The book was published in 1994 by McFarland & Co, Inc, Publishers of Jefferson North Carolina and London. Regards, Tony Bushell.
If you are interested in Australian ex-servicemen there are lists of all Japanese held POWs at the Australian War Memorial. They may be accessed online here: AMF Prisoners of War and Missing in the Far East and South West Pacific Islands
Does anyone know how many POW camps run by the Japanese there were in total and where they were located. Are there any surviving records that tell us this and if there are such records, would they contain the names of the servicemen kept in them ??. Steven Hi Steven, I have just finished extracting lists of Japanese camps, locations and Camp Commandants from a National Archives file. The same file also gives lots of information on Italian and German Camps.
I did not see this originally so I assume you would have all of this info by now. From my post 11/9/2006 http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/prisoners-war/8377-allies-japanese-pow-camps-database.html?highlight=pow+camps+japan POW Research Network Japan WW2 Prisoners of War, Killed while POW's
I have been researching my Great Uncle Horace Obed Page who died towards the end of the war in Japan. He is buried at the Fukoyama war cemetery. The best lead that I have been given to find out about where he was imprisoned and how he died was the Prisoners of War Network Japan. However, I have accessed their website and it seems that it is no longer active. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find out more?
There are some SOE files covering MASTIFF the operation to relieve camps in Burma, Malaya, Thailand java and Sumatra at the end of the war - they will contain int on the camps and possibly after action reports.
I have found this website to be the best for info on Camp names and locations. Sadly the man who ran this site died late last year, however, I do believe the the site still functions. POWs in Japan, World War II, POW Camps Good luck. Steve.
Mike, I was at the National Archives today and found Horace's Japanese index card, here it is attached. You may already have this information, if so apologies for repeating. I cannot help with translation but the members on FEPOW will sometimes kindly help with this. Try the Community group. Fepow Community Steve.
Hi Mike, Translation of the card is the key for you. As I said the FEPOW community are pretty good. Some other sites you might find useful are: Researching FEPOW History Conference : Home The Changi Museum Official Website Allied POWS in Japan These sites and the people who run them are very knowledgeable, I'm sure they can help. Steve.
Found this at Monash University: Reference map: Prisoner of War & Internee Camps in the Far East. Published by Australian Red Cross Society. No date but would be 1942-45.
