The caption on Facebook said that she was getting ready to do a USO show in 1944 near the Battle of the Bulge. USO - yes. 1944 - no. Location - Germany. The cutting for sale on eBay is from Life March 5th 1945 LIFE - Google Books
Re Ardennes - IIRC she was to do a USO show in Honsfeld in the sector of the 99th US Infantry Division in Dec 44.
I am perhaps seeing things But! The young sergeant standing next to her looks like Audy Murphy. Cheers Rob B.
He looks short enough to be him and he was in Italy during the first have of 44. He was also a staff sergeant at that time. He wasn't famous then so it would be a heck of a coincidence be be in line next to Dietrich but ya never know. EDIT: Just looked it up and Dietrich was 5'6" and Murphy was 5'5".
When I was a young lad playing baseball, the dugouts would hurl putdowns on the other team out in the field. One of our tried and true favorites was: "Your momma wears combat boots." Ms Dietrich wears her combat boots quite well!
One of the books on the battle includes some quotes from the officer who was escorting her. Described her as absolutely exhausted from her work. Anyone walking around an army camp might need sensible shoes.
Don't know why, but this made me think of a regular insult in Bugs Bunny cartoons - "Your mother wears Army boots!" - which I never figured out....
It looks like a classier version of Leno's 1934 Rolls Royce with the Merlin engine. That's a very beautiful car but it made me shudder when I saw the whitewalls. I used to hate having to scrub those on my Dad's 1970's god machines (Olds 98, Caprice Classic and Buick LeSabre).
