I'm sure there is something in the division's official history, though I cannot consult it currently as I am travelling. (Maybe next week, if no one else has a look)

Karen - I think you will find that is the English translation of the inscription in Gaelic on the HD Memorial at St Valéry: "Là a’bhlair ‘s math na càirdean"

  3. The 51st HD fascinates me. I started out to write a historical fiction about an American doctor in the RAMC, but ended up incorporating a lot about the 51st. Manuscript is finished, and now I am editing like crazy.

Karen - good luck with your authorship. My lockdown journey has been with my uncle, one of the 1,500 or so who did manage to escape from the surrender at St Valéry. He came down the cliffs near Veules-les-Roses on a rope of rifle slings, and made it on to a ship for the UK. He remained with the HD all the way from Egypt to Sicily, and then from Normandy to Germany.
