I once read that these regular spikes every 6, 7 or 8 days is because at the weekend daily figures aren't always received. so they just add them onto the next day's figures.

Well that didn't take long to get into the top 5.

Brazil, India and South Africa have unfortunately the same socio-economic issues of having a large percentage of the population living in poverty and on top of each other. A perfect breeding ground.
USA and Russia, well they just have ................................. (won't add what I think as the post will get deleted)

They also have leaders who originally dismissed the disease as an insignificant problem

    Coronapocalypse in Holland
Lao Tzu — 'There is no greater danger than underestimating your opponent.'

    Weekly update:

Corona is making a comeback in Holland: nearly 1,000 new cases in a week. After weeks of a declining trend, the number of new corona cases is steadily rising again, according to the latest RIVM report, though the numbers are not (yet) as disturbing as they used to be. In the test streets the percentage of positive tests increases and the reproduction number (Rt Real Time) is above 1 (1,29 to be more specific). Especially young people are tested positive. In three to four weeks hospitalizations are expected to rise again. This COVID virus is a real bugger. If it was a normal flu, it would long have gone into a kind of summer-hibernation. Not!

Last week (14 - 21 July), 987 new individuals were reported to have tested positive for COVID-19. That is almost twice as much as the week before. 19 patients have been hospitalized for COVID-19. That is an increase of 3 patients compared to the previous week. 7 persons have been reported dead.

    Numbers now are:
week 1 - 7 July: 19 new deaths, total now 6.132; number of confirmed cases 50.705
week 8 - 14 July: 8 deaths, total now 6.140; number of confirmed cases 51.239
week 14 - 21 July: 7 deaths, total now 6.147; number of confirmed cases 52.226

For comparison the (official) mortality rate caused by Covid per million of inhabitants:
(based on the deaths registered by the John Hopkins University)

    Belgium
(11,4 mln) with 9.808 deaths, it is 860,35
UK (66,5 mln) this number, with 45.586 deaths, is 685,50
Spain (46,7 mln), with 28.426 deaths, is 608,69
Italy (60,4 mln) with 35.082 deaths, the number is 580,83
Sweden (10,2 mln) with 5.667 deaths is 555,59
France (67,0 mln) with 30.175 deaths, is 450,37
USA (327,2 mln) with 143.190 deaths, it is 437,62
Holland (17,2 mln) with 6.147 deaths, it now is 357,38
Canada (37,1 mln) with 8.913 deaths is 240,24
Germany (82,9 mln) with 9.102 deaths is 109,80

Population numbers (courtesy SteveDee) Coronavirus deaths per million by country 2020 | Statista. Some countries - like Belgium - include suspected Covid deaths that were not tested. The official corona mortality of various countries is therefore less comparable.

Belgium still is the relatively hardest hit country in Europe and maybe world-wide (a sky-high death rate of 860+ per million inhabitants - but Belgium has been very strict with itself. It counts not only deaths after a positive test, but also of those who showed symptoms that indicate the virus. The UK and Spain follow at a distance. Germany, where the virus spread at the same time as in Holland, is doing extremely well. The country has a more disciplined population and does a lot of testing, contact tracing and isolating.
The death rates in Sweden, the only country in Europe that opted for a smooth approach, with only a very limited lock down, are approaching the Italian rates.
The deaths in the USA are now fast on the rise (approx. 1.000 a day), though the rate for the time being is dampened by the large population of the country. Initially my best guess was that the USA would approach the rates of France, a country which is also alternated by overcrowded cities and a sparsely populated countryside. I now opt for a Swedish scenario (the country with a more lenient lock down).

You know it's bad when Gallows humor arrives. Time to bet over/under for the YTD body count on November 2.

Never said or implied that it was a hoax, so sheesh right back at you my friend. It's that I find the media coverage of the issue is very skewed as usual and with medical facilities getting extra federal funding for every covid case they encounter leads to misreporting of numbers and possibly fraudulent efforts to obtain those funds. When there are obscene amounts of money being thrown around, there will always be the unscrupulous types trying to cash in on the fears and desperation of others, real or perceived. Same with after hurricanes around here.

It's a minced oath - comes from Jeeze - a minced oath is an avoidance of blasphemy so in the 17th century or earlier God's wounds became gadzooks and also swounds. Crikes probably evolved from Christ and gosh from God

Shheesh is a mild wtf. Money always gets thrown around when we fight a war. It's SOP. And as were capitalists so that's not all bad. My sheesh was for thinking hospitals drum up business for the ICU unfettered as a capitalist business decision.

Need to look at the death figures rather than simply positive cases - particularly the excess deaths. These suggest that the US has a real problem
