Father, Edward Frank Sturgeon, was posted Permanent Attached to this unit on 8th August 1945. Has anyone any idea what and where this unit was? Any information would be great. On 25th September he arrived in East Africa.
From: Attestation Book and Tracer cards (World War Two) - RootsChat.Com That post suggests 44 RHU was based in the UK. Though the next link suggests 44 RHU was later in Holland, where a member died and was buried there. See and translate before accessing link: Wilfred Ernest Barlow This: Fuller Horace William 6292969 - 70 Brigade shows one person, not your subject, moved around and at one time was with 44 RHU. There is a reference on pg. 428 to 44 RHU being a RASC camp between Woking and Chobham in July 1945. See: 'The History of the American Field Service, 1920-1955' by George Rock. RASC being the Royal Army Service Corps. See: Royal Army Service Corps - Wikipedia
Thank you for this info. Just 3 weeks later his record shows "embarked UK draft RPJ RR, and 3 weeks after that he arrived in ?Mombassa. I've no idea what RPJ or RR is.
RPJRR is just a code everyone on that draft had on their paperwork etc. Several threads on here if you search ''draft recognition codes'' such as this one. >> Draft recognition codes.
My Grandfather was posted to 44 RHU in the UK on 15 July 1945. He had previously been in North West Europe. I found the war diary for 44 RHU for this period at the National Archives reference WO 166/17842 Unfortunately the record hasn't been digitalised yet. 44 Rft. Holding Unit | The National Archives
