I note that the officer involved in digging out the Lancaster is not wearing wellington boots which indicates he must have been a squadron engineering officer of some type....perhaps an opportunity for a posed photograph for him while he would run the risk that the snow would ruin his black shoes. The groundcrew are wearing wellington boots which were not part of the issued official uniform but were issued on a personal basis, as required for appropriate duties, by the squadron stores....an essential bit of gear for those who were expected to carry out their duties on the airfield and at dispersals in all weathers.
We had a brief blizzard today. We have had about 45 cm/ 17.7in of snow most of this year but lately about a week long spell of warmer weather and lost much of the snow cover during it, so yesterday it was down to 29 cm / a little under 12 in, but today we got 4 cm / 1.6in more. A couple of photos taken during my daily walk, I happened to be outside when the blizard arrived. Taken downwind taken crosswind
Great photos Juha! Here's a (relitively) well known chap endeavouring to make the most of some of your recent weather. Kind regards, always, Jim.
Thanks! Interesting video. I made a couple observations based on my military training. Putting your weapon on the snow was no-no because of the risk to get its muzzle full of snow. You went to the kneeling position and put the barrel on your ham/calf. I had difficulties to keep the legs of the bipod of Kvkk (light mg) 62 on the skis during winter shootings, when they jumped off they sunk into the snow and the muzzle of course also dropped. I hated the ahkio/sledge, it toppled easily and threw its content (A/T mines, tent, stove, ammo boxes) into snow. Especially nasty was downhill if your buddy could not brake it properly and it came over rear/tail part of your skis. The chap has also made a video on KvKK 62 actual shooting at the beginning and from 8:10 onwards.
Proper snow today. It only laid briefly on the roads but I'm glad that I hadn't actually got around to taking the winter tyres off....It's all a bit odd. This was forecast for the Ardennes but we're below 50m. It's not a motorcycling day. Still, it's nice singing Christmas songs.
I have snow. Heavy snow and strong winds forecast for the next ten hours. I shall be nice and warm. Perhaps I will stay in bed all day (or at least until its time to watch Sharpe). Mike
Yes. A short while ago my lovely old cast iron boiler refused to deliver heat so I sent for a heating engineer who got it going then muttered an expletive, shut it down, condemned it as unsafe and sealed it. The boss came along and since I claimed extreme old age he agreed to replace it immediately. Unfortunately the old boiler was in the cellar and under current regulations that is not permitted so I have a modern, efficient new boiler in the bathroom airing cupboard, plus miles of new piping etc. I also have an incomprehensively complicated hand held control with built in thermostat. It does come on if it gets cold but normally I manage to fool it by moving it into the cold porch when I want heat and into the warmest room if it is too hot. Simple. Mike
How kind of nature to strike on the day I was planning to clean the gutters. The gutters that really need cleaning. Ah well, if nothing more is heard from this account later, you'll know why.
