Need help finding this soldier

  1. Wow, so Gilbert was considered dead for days or even weeks, but in reality he managed to survive the war ( maybe he was captured ) and to live 40 years more.
It could be possible that he had a wife and maybe sons or daughters.

Cheers for checking - I suppose one other angle is to search the newspaper archives from 1930 for "John Stewart" and also combinations of "won", "winner", "medal", "award" and so on in case the award of the actual medal is reported somewhere but that could take a bit of trawling

IF it IS John Stewart of the London Scottish, suggest you check out his entry on findagrave here:
LCPL John Stewart (1919-1944) - Find a Grave...

If you manage to get a photo of his headstone, please let me know or better still upload it to that record on findagrave, I am keen to complete as far as possible all of the records of the London Scottish war dead.

Marcello, the opening post author, has not logged on since his last post 23/9/2022. We are minus any update on the emails dispatched (see Post 19), so I will send him a PM next asking for an update.

    Steve,

There was no response to my PM, so you are stuck I'm afraid.

  6. I’ve visited the cemetery this morning, here’s a picture of his grave.
