If they ever hope to trade internationally again then they will have to settle their bills. This is simply a further step on the way to them becoming a second North Korea. Act like an arsehole, deny it and believe it yourself seems to be the only way that they know.

    I agree Rich,

And much like the Kim's, the esteemed leader can continue living in an actual palace, whilst all around, lesser life forms become extinct.

Though I thought the recent speech from the esteemed leader of the new USSR sounded more like an equally popular historic figure from Europe ie. "Russia forever" = the 1000 year Reich? (although, we have to grateful to Mr Hilter, otherwise this particular forum wouldn't exist).

But returning to the man of the moment, do you think he's discussing with his chronies whether or not he can actually turn back the tide? I mean, he's definitely a complete Cnut.

On a personal note, I'm thinking actual civilisation should sound a bit like this:

According to uk television news it isn't encircled any more as the occupiers have withdrawn (confirmed by the vacating forces news) It has also been mentioned that Fire Services are fighting a fire at an airfield in Crimea after an aircraft slid off the runway.
Perhaps I should have hung onto that old NBC suit after all.

I expect this is a "work in progress" as the title is dated 14/7/2022.

It is a series of articles under 'Myths and misconceptions around Russian military intent: How they affect Western policy, and what can be done'. Busy now, so I have not read any more.

If Donetsk is now Russia then with the fall of Lyman, Russian forces have just suffered their first defeat on their own soil for almost eighty years. The only one of the victors of 1945 to have achieved such an honour !

Yesterday, in a Goebbels-worthy "Sportpalast speech," "Vlad the Short" announced that the occupied territories would belong to Russia "forever."
Twenty-four hours later, his glorious army has withdrawn from Lyman and the Ukrainians are on the march, undeterred
The Kremlin clique is great at bullying peasants and stealing chickens. But when they get a boot in the face, all glory is abruptly over.

If only they left it at stealing chickens. As commanders of the Russian army though they will be trying to lead by example and father children by them too.

Ret'd Australian General Ryan adds his overview today, via Twitter, and open to all via: Thread by @WarintheFuture on Thread Reader App

There is a RFE/RL five minute filmed report on fighting, which makes several interesting points. Notably that the Russian artillery was well dug in (not a shock) and that all the Russians had plenty of ammunition - unlike what we are often told. The summary states:

A two hours old map of the southern front via Shashank Joshi, his edited text states:

Apart from the numerous images of the offensives that are about to take place, I now know of some pretty spectacular videos featuring "Mad Max" vehicles.
Besides the ubiquitous "technicals" (these upgunned pick-up trucks of "Toyota wars" fame), the use of combat buggies represents a "specialty" of the Ukrainian armed forces in the current offensives
Always interested in fringe phenomena, I did a little digging. Here is a small guide for those who are interested:

It all started in 2014 with such curious one-offs as the "Bucephalus",
    01 Buc.jpg
Then, in 2016, the Pegasus vehicles, produced in small series, were regularly procured to the UA scouts
    A - Pegas.jpg
In the meantime, vehicles from the small manufacturers VOLS
    A -VOLS.jpg
and INGUAR have joined the fleet.
    A - Inguar.jpg
The ranks were filled up by commercial series products like Polaris Ranger,
    01 pol.jpg
    Tomcar
    01 tom.jpg
    or CF Moto Tracker
    01 mot.jpg
and of course still various homebuilts
    A -DIY.jpg

These vehicles are especially popular with the Ukrainian Recces and SOF, but also with the various spearheading front-line units:

Cheap, easy to maintain, very capable off-road and heavily armed with HMG, grenade launchers and especially ATGM, they offer excellent mobility with high firepower, which is a valuable addition to the Ukrainian kind of manoeuver warfare - especially in the sweeping offensives in Kharkiv and Kherson with their relatively open and uncovered areas.
And are thus also in the tradition of Makhno's "Tachankas".
