My wife shouted up to me this afternoon that the Aussie cricketer had just died. I said I already knew about Rod Marsh, then I realised what had actually happened!

Even though he caused such extreme devastation to English batsmen and our Ashes hopes and dreams, there is no doubt he has been the best bowler in World cricket for the last 30 years or so. Very sad loss to sport in general.

Unbelievable, still can’t get my head round it, fantastic cricketer and, of course, that incredible, impossible delivery to Gatting! Way, way too young.

Rod Marsh gone too, a moustached legend from my teenage days, great keeper and Aussie character. 1977 and I’ll never forget the great gusto and overkill with which he smashed the stumps to run out Derek Randall with Sir Geoffrey looking crestfallen at t’other end - and then came Boyk’s fantastic partnership with Knotty and all was well in the world again.

I'm sure all Aussie cricketers were tough even before Marsh, Lillee, Thomson and the Chappells, but to me all their success and uncompromising behaviour over the past 40 years or so, has stemmed directly from the above mentioned gentlemen and rubbed off on the likes of Shane Warne.

As you say Martin, way too young.

My eyebrows raised so high when we declared that they were six inches above my head. Very happy my cynicism was completely unfounded!

I think everyone's did! As Nasser Hussain remarked: "No Captain over the last 30 years would have declared so early." But I guess that was the carrot to dangle at Pakistan. At tea, I thought they were the likely winners.
