    Hi Sally,

Thanks for the photos, any idea where they might have been taken ??? I have Paul Pariso looking for names also... And yes could we please have his name, did you contact Grahame Warner about this with his new 10 Para book which should be out some time soon ???

I also had the pleasure of meeting Frank Newhouse a good number of times.. I will check and see if I can add any names to the above photos for you...

    Kind Regards
    Tom

    Hi

My uncle's name was Frank Burton. I think one of the men in the second photo, on the right, might be H. MacFie? I have seen him on the obituary for Harry Houghton. My uncle was in A coy.

    Hi John,

Many thanks for your offer but Stamp gave me an email address for Cor Janse, the author and Cor has very kindly sent me the excerpt regarding my uncle.

    Regards

    Hi Steve,

That sounds amazing. I'm not sure why you were unable to attach the photo. My son helped me with my photos and I think he clicked on 'more reply options' to show the attach symbol. You may have already tried this of course! I hope we can find a way for me to see it.

    Thanks Steve,

That is a brilliant addition to my archives on my uncle.

He told a story of one of his jumps where he thought that he had landed on a black tyre, only to find that it was a coiled up snake!

His experience at Ginkel Heath was not a good one and he was taken prisoner, having been seriously wounded.

He played bugle at some of the ceremonies at Oosterbeek and Arnhem.

    Hi Sally,

I've looked at the two pics you posted but sadly I can't put any names to the faces at the moment. From what I can tell, three of the men appear in both pictures (see attached). Your uncle, Frank Burton, was in No.3 Platoon of A Company which was commanded at Arnhem by Lt Kiaer, so perhaps the pics are of men from that platoon? However, in post No.22 you say you think that one of the men in the second picture may be H. MacFie? My records show that McFie (MacFie) was in the Medium Machine Gun platoon of the Support Company, so perhaps the pics are of that platoon and not your Uncle's?

Also on both pictures the title says "Frank, left back" but from what I can see the guys in the back row of picture one are different from the fellas in the back row of picture two? Could you be more specific with which one is your Uncle?

All the best and thanks very much for posting up the pictures :)

    Paul,
In the top pic does that look like a stable door to you. Some of the Bn were billeted in the stables in Somerby.

    Hello mate,

Yes, it could be a stable door but I wouldn't swear to it.

    All the best. :)

These photographs were taken at Spanhoe airfield during the 4 hr delay on the second lift on the 18th Sept 44.

From the info I have been given they are both photos of men from Support Coy and most of the men are from the mortars platoon

That would tally up with one of the men being McFie then.

    Cheers Grahame :salut:

    Hi Grahame,

Thanks for the info on the photos. I am trying to get them restored. Does it make sense that my uncle, Frank Burton, would have been with them as he was in A coy? Do you know the names of any of them? I'm interested to hear more about the book!

    Hi again,

I've just looked at my uncle's record of service with the 10th and this is what it reads:
Which company did you join? "HQ" Coy and "A" Coy.
Which Platoon/Department did you join? Provost and "A" Coy
Which Section did you join? 1 Sec 1 PLN
He lists others in his section including PLN SGT Tex Banwell (what a great character he was!)

So according to this he was in 1 PLN not 3. I do know that he was Lt Col Smyth's batman.

    Hi Paul,

If you see my post to Steve there is some more info on my uncle there.
In answer to your question, Frank is the one at the back not holding a mug and in the second he is looking out from behind the one with the moustache and the pistol. On closer inspection I think they may have been taken at different times because the background is different and I have to admit Frank looks different too!

    Thanks Sally,

I would agree that the man named as H MacFie in the small pic is definitely the same fella as in the picture you originally posted. Can you tell us where you got the small one from?

    All the best :)
