I'd agree NI Number, his Army number wouldn't have any letters - unless he was RASC in which case an S/ or T/ at the start
There is a private message system on the forum ("Inbox" in the upper right) and I will send you a link from which you can download the pages of the war diary. Cheers!
No problem, I was assuming the War Diary would have it for officers (but not OR's) - I think I've got it 199849 Harold Dallas M.B. cheers
It would, but I told my friend he could skip photographing those pages because I didn't have a use for them :-/
Joe Webster Service number is his Royal Artillery number, before being injured during the evacuation from Cherbourg in 1940 he was with the 75th Highland Heavy Rgt RA at St Valery in support of the 51st Highland div holding Le Harve. After destroying the guns they walked to Cherbourg as the route to Dunkirk had been cut off by the German advance and the surrender of the 51st Highland (Gordon Highlanders) at Le Havre. No disgrace there, their orders were to hold the position for as long as possible in support of the evacuation, they did, just like the Warwicks, Norfolks and others they fought till they had no more ammunition and in the face of overwhellming tactics and modern armour. fortunately, unlike the Warwicks and Nolfolk lads there was no SS massacre reprisals. Joe's number is 873612 GNR Thats more like it, it was his NI number, the letter he wrote was to the NHS in support of his claim for deafness assistance hence the inclusion of the number and the confusion when he said it was his number.
Oh wow Thank you, thank you very much. just need to decipher do you know what the TAC would have been on his M10 (46 and and what is BOAR , R.F.H.K.O. this where i generally fall down. Ian
If someone finds these of use for research or publishing they are welcome - 102 A/T Reg and Joe Webster
Hi Paul, I have the war diary pages proper (June 1-30) but not all the extra stuff like field returns of officers and other ranks. Chris
More details about Webster. He was in C Troop. Wounded 19 May 1944. From the History of The Northumberland Hussars. It describes the "Grim" action in which he took part, along with killed and wounded names.
Hi Chris , Thats great , would it be possible to get a copy of the War diary pages June ? Many thanks Paul
