Hi, I know this thread is really old but have stumbled across it. My grandfather was killed 26/27 April 1941. His name was Peter McMillan Marshall service number 7587804. Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
He was attached to the 106th Lancashire Hussars.
My mother was 18 months old when he was killed and we do not have any photos of him.
If anyone has any info that would be great.
    Thanks Gerald

My Grandfather W/O Walter Harris died between the 25th and 26th. He is remembered on the Athens Memorial. He was a full time soldier. He was a BSM for with anti aircraft. Sadly the family have no photos of him whatsoever as later in the war my Grandmother and Father's house was bombed out and all photographs, letters etc were destroyed in the ensuing blaze. I wonder if there are records of soldiers such as photographs kept on file anywhere, before my 86 year old Dad leaves this Earth. Walters father survived the first and Crimean war. My Father served for 22 years in the RN and I served for 10 in the RAF.

Hi John it looks like your relative and mine died on the same day with same Regiment I only knew he had died via a torpedo and wondered how if he wasn't in Navy, this info has helped me too. So thank you for asking the question.

  12. I may have some great recognition news for the family's of British troops that died during the evacuation soon.

  13. HMS WRYNECK, built by Palmers, launched, 13/5/1918, attacked by German Stuka aircraft and sunk off Nauplia, Greece,April 27, 1941. She was helping in the evacuation of troops from Greece, and in the process had picked up, with the help of another destroyer, HMS Diamond, around 700 troops and crew from the 11,600 ton Dutch liner 'Slamat' now converted as a troopship and under British control, which had been attacked and damaged earlier.

The HMS Wryneck and HMS Diamond were both sunk in the attack with the loss of nearly both their crews and all the survivors of the Slamat. The Wryneck lost seven officers and 98 ratings, the Diamond lost seven officers and 141 ratings.

Of approximately 950 troops and crews of both ships, only one officer, fourteen naval ratings and eight soldiers were rescued.

I’m trying to trace my grandfather. WO11 BSM Isaac Alexander Hartley, record record missing 26th /27th April 1941. I’ve applied for his service records but they are now with National Archives and prob going take a while! Tbh g is we are in Athens this week, tomorrow we are going the CWG to pay our respects. But if anyone could shed any more light on his poss ill movements that would be great. One of the posts above satu the 106 would have been evacuated via Kalamata. Thanks Lawrence
