112976 Captain, Temporary Major Anthony Gerald WAY, 3rd Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS

During an Battalion by 3rd Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS, on M. GRANDE on the night 27th May / 28th May 1944, Major A.G. WAY commanded No. 1 Company (the Left forward Company).

The Company had to fight its way up the hill for over 1500 yards. Major WAY commanded his Company with great determination, personally leading there local attacks on Machine Gun posts.

Before reaching the objective he was hit by a burst of Machine Gun fire, six bullets entering his abdomen. He continued to give out orders and encourage his Company whilst lying on the ground.

His personal courage were a great inspiration to all ranks and enabled the objective to be reached.

Major WAY's conduct when commanding a Company on many previous occasions, both in ITALY and in TUNISIA in the winter of 1942/1943, has always been outstanding and his devotion to duty of the highest order.

Recommended for immediate M.C.
