Before you all go off on a wild goose chase looking for Andrew W Ewing a check of the 19 March 1940 London Gazette shows that 121741 was the service number allocated to Andrew Maurice Ewing

Well done to you both. A new pair of eyes (with a brain) often helps. In mitigation his initial looked like a W. He was the same age as my father.
So there was an Indian connection as you suspected TD. Now need to check his marriage and any offspring resulting from this. Hopefully there will be an unusual name to track.

Found him on the 1911 census when his father, a missionary, came home on furlough from Ceylon. Staying in Fazakerly West Derby.

The Regimental museum were unable to help so it looks like a letter to the local Aberdeen press. I also have a fistful of telephone numbers to try my luck with should all else fail.

Stuart Avery In my wagon & not a muleteer.

Its just a thought here Lionboxer, are we on the correct regiment here? I only ask, because I've just spent the last 10 minutes or so looking through THE STORY OF THE BORDER REGIMENT 39-45 by P. J. Shears. No mention of your man in question. It would be some what strange to not list a Captain in the book. Are you sure you do not mean the King's Own Scottish Borderers?

Spanner in the works may be.

Stu, thanks for your thoughts but it is definitely Borders. Not sure if he became a Major or higher. Although he gave his unit as 2nd Border Regt he was at the time attached to 20 Reinforcement Camp as postings officer to the Borders who were part of 20 Indian Div.

After barking up several wrong trees I think there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
