Hi, does anyone have any information on the 13 Corps Supply Column for April 1941? I am trying to find out how Pte L G Scott RASC was killed on the 9th April 1941 whilst part of this unit, he is commorated on the Brookwood memorial in the UK. Cheers, Rick
I’m researching Reginald Ashby of 13 corps Rasc petrol park who died 17 March 1941 Keithlet York’s. Any info welcomed
Copy of his death cert will tell you what he died of - if that what you are after England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007 Name: Reginald J Ashby Death Age: 34 Birth Date: abt 1907 Registration Date: Mar 1941 Registration district: Keighley Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding Volume: 9a Page: 827 Due to it being a civil death cert I would assume he died outside of 'active service' for whatever reason Do you need to know more than that?? TD
Hi, welcome to the forum. Can you gives us some more detail? From the Roll of Honour on page 658. I have three chaps that have the surname of Ashby! R.J. was a Cpl.
Thanks . We’re trying to avoid having to order certificates as we are researching all the names on our War memorial and the cost is prohibitive but if we can’t find anything elsewhere we will have to do it. Any info on where he may have been based would be good. Thanks again
Well whichever way you go at some point money will probably need to be spent. The problem is that he could have been based anywhere but died outside active service, so he could have been killed in an accident off base or during a period of leave. So if the War Diaries for the unit (which will cost money to obtain) say he was based in for example Aldershot, that wouldnt help find out how he died in Keighley TD
Okay I’ll look into all the possibilities and probably the death certificate will be the easiest and cheapest option. I was assuming he died on active service in an accident on base but as you say there could be other options. A fresh pair of eyes is always good for seeing other possibilities. Thank you.
If he died on 'active service' then he probably would not have a civil death certificate - It could also be that there is some confusion as Stuart states there are 3 Ashbys recorded and I assume one of those is this man Corporal ASHBY, REGINALD JACK Service Number T/1059478 Died 17/03/1941 Aged 35 13 Corps Petrol Park Royal Army Service Corps Son of Jack and Jeanette Ashby; husband of Alice Maud Ashby, of Ebbw Vale. Casualty He died on that date you mention (but so could others) but where the connection is to Keighley ....................... I will leave to you to explore TD
Yes this is the man. He was born in Swanley Kent but married a woman from Wales and is buried in Ebbw Vale. I assumed he was based in Yorkshire but now see this may not have been the case. I think I’ll just order the death certificate and solve the mystery.
If that is his story then why is he remembered on the memorial in Keighley, ..............................., I would assume the unit was there at the time and he was evetually moved to Ebbw Vale for family burial TD
'Soldier in Canal' - The body of Reginald Jack Ashby (34), a soldier, was recovered form the canal at Shipley yesterday. (See attachment). Regards Bruneval
