Not one of my strong points, AA.
What was the probable makeup at this time or failing that, does anyone know what would this unit comprise at full strength, just to give me some idea? The unit was mentioned as being 'a troop' strength in the account of Lieutenant Watson of the OBLI.

Can't speak specifically for the case of this one, but, in May 1940, a LAA Regiment consisted of Headquarters and three or four batteries, each of nine to twelve (Bofors) 40-mm. light anti-aircraft guns. Personal weapons were as expected...pistols, rifles, LMGs and AT rifles.*

    * though my grandad's battery (155 LAA) ranged ,at varying times, between 6 and 12 guns. The War Diary mentions the issue of the Vickers MMG and Lewis also.

151 Battery was part of 51 LAA Regiment which had 152 and 153 Batteries as well.

Thanks Dave, so about 3 Bofors being present plus MGs is probably not unlikely then...:camouflage:

Sorry Rob & Dave missed your posts or I would've replied sooner

51st LAA Regt. was in 2nd Anti-Aircraft Brigade commanded by Brigadier E. W. Chadwick.

51st LAA Regiment consisted of 20 officers and 534 Other Ranks as of 10th May 1940.

51st LAA Regt. was equiped with 24 x 40mm guns and 24 x LMGs most likely Lewis Guns.

What Battalion was Lieutenant Watson? If 4 OBLI, is there a link to his account?

    Cheers

I'm not sure where I got the quote from but this is what I have in my notes:
(the following taken from War Diaries posted on WW2Talk Forum:smile:

Lieutenant Watson, 1st Buckinghamshire OBLI Regt
“The force under Brigadier Somerset at Cassel was as follows:
    2nd Gloucester Regt
    4th Ox & Bucks LI
    140 Field Regt (less 1 bty) 18pdr
    5 Regt RHA 18pdr
209 Bty AT Regt (less 1 troop)
223 Bty AT Regt (less 1 troop)
151 Lt AA Bty (1 troop)
    … (5 trench 75’s)”

“On the night 27/28th the approaches to Mont Des Collets were held by Armoured Recce Bde…one regiment of the Armd. Recce. Bde, the East Riding Yeomanry, was left to assist us in holding the road to Steenvoorde”

“Enemy mortars were very troublesome to us…the Cheshires MGs could not silence them and the 18 pdrs found them too close in to deal with…Two Bde orderlies had a great day firing at enemy tanks with a French 75 whose crew had disappeared”

And I think this is Croonaert's post with scans of war diaries:
Lt.Watson (1st Bucks Bn OBLI) 145 bde account...

Hi Les, for your ref I think that should read Mont des Cats rather than Collets.

Are the war diaries referring to 'Mont des Recollets' on the Steenvoorde road?

Indeed it is-Can't say I've ever heard of it though, I have always thought the hill to be Cassel and the only other one that can be seen being Mont des Cats quite a few miles away.

    Cheers for that Les

My Grandad was also in 155 LAA, Lewis Renshaw. Could you provide any details that you may have.
