Hi all I’d be very grateful for any help in researching my grandfather Jack Winslow who served in 156 battalion at Arnhem. Service Number 6896410. I have requested his service records and recently purchased ‘From Delhi to Arnhem’ which looks like a fantastic read. I think he was part of B Company and may have gone over with the advance party on 17th September. I have seen elsewhere some documents that appear to reveal a list of soldiers in each aircraft. Is this sort of information available at the National Archive? I will be visiting Arnhem for the first time later this year and would like to see some of the locations where he fought. Thanks very much for your assistance. Phil Winslow
A quick look at the nominal roll in From Delhi to Arnhem confirms he was in B Company. Originally served with the Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Enjoy the book, it is superb.
Cpl Jack Robert Winslow was in Chalk 623 which flew to Holland on the 18th September. He was taken prisoner on the 21st September. There will be a large contingent of families of 156 members at Arnhem this year and they are organising a number of events. If you pm me I will put you in touch with the organisers
UK, British Prisoners of War, 1939-1945 Name: J R Winslow Rank: Corporal Army Number: 6898410 Regiment: Army Air Corps Record Office: Army Air Corps and Army Catering Corps Record Office, Drill Hall, East Claremont St., Edinburgh 9 Record Office Number: 45 Hmm - there are quite a number in this database you dont have a POW number - never have found out why that is TD
Hi Richard, I’ve got a copy of WO392/1 from NA - an official list of German POW’s. I don’t know if it is the last of the German POW lists that were circulated but Cpl Winslow isn’t listed. Steve
Hi Steve I have a copy of WO 392 which I think would be somewhere about 1943 I notice WO 392/1 is September 1944 Reference: WO 392/1 Description: WO 392; IMPERIAL PRISONERS OF WAR HELD IN GERMANY OR GERMAN-OCCUPIED TERRITORY. Section 1: British Army Date: 1944 Sept Held by: The National Archives, Kew Legal status: Public Record(s) Closure status: Open Document, Open Description Then I notice: Reference: WO 392/11 Description: Section 1: British Army Date: 1945 Apr Held by: The National Archives, Kew So I guess in all for British POW's in German hands there seems to be at least 3 files and the last one purely for Army, so I guess the IRCR didnt have time to visit the other camps before it all fell apart TD
